Hell everyone,
I will be purchasing a mini utv for my son soon. I have never liked the china built parts and I’m a strong believer in supporting Made in the USA companies.
My dilemma is this.
If I buy the Polaris 170 and while enjoying it a BMS 150cc utv or Pitster shows up and plays will I feel like I spent double for a better part or spent double for the same thing.
We will spend most of our time in the dunes and hard pack so it needs to perform well. I am not expecting it to perform more than an LT80 in the dunes but need the nest platform.

What is your advice?

PS: it will get a cage, doors, seats, belts, shocks, and all the necessary up grades.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

We have a rzr 170 and my kids just love it. Just got back from another trip to Durhamtown and it had no trouble at all.

I say if you have the money you should get the 170. I know some people have had problems with theirs, but ours has had zero problems yet.

Also I think you might have answered your own question. If you are planning on upgrading it will be much harder if you go with your other choices..I do believe. Someone correct me if I am wrong please.

Having a 150 Buggy for several years prior the the 170. My kids and self were looking for an upgrade. If it's your first in this size and wanting a bit cheaper price. Maybe the Pitster will be fine. It is not double the price. $3200+tax or $4600ish w/tax. $1400 +- difference. I had modified the 150 to it's max but only equaled the 170 stock. Our 150 was great for some trails and fine for around camp @ the dunes. Now the "Polaris 170" is fun in the dunes and crazy fun on the trails. Having 2 passengers with all it's upgrades and modifications it runs strong. I need to knock on wood, but not one problem. Oh ya the rear trailing arm, which Pitster has cloned. And I am thinking the resale value should be higher with the name brand.

The more and more I research this the more confused I get.
I had a chance to look at one of the BMS avengers the other day. Sadly from the time I spoke with the guy and hours later it was gone by the time I got there. However he could have made me a good deal on a buggy LOL. I kind of had a bad taste in my mouth when I left and looks like I can get the Rzr 170 for $4,551 OTD with tax registration everything which seems like a very good california deal. Still hard to choke up $4,500 when a copy if $2,500 but hel;l can you really put a price on our kids fun and smiles?? :)

I will let you guys know how it goes.

Check out this thread. mikd bought one around feb and has posted every upgrade and every problem he has had. its a 37 page forum but very informative. he told me he would take the same path if he was going to buy another one, he has the Blade. if you buy the rzr 170 you will have to do all the same upgrades (snorkel, skid plate, shock upgrade) to make it trail worthy.

ps I have a brand new Pitster pro that was just delivered monday waiting for me to have time to assemble. I cant give an opinion yet but that is the path I took after talking to mikd on this forum and {Gary, Mardy, Chris, and FRD(matt) at pitsterpro}

For what its worth, the pitster has double a-ARM front , I don't think Polaris does unless the new models have changed. If the Polaris wasn't built in the same kinda Chinese factories, I'd agree with chosing Polaris, but in this case I think your paying $1500 extra for the Polaris name and single front suspension.

We've had our "chinabuggy" since March 1st of 20111. Zero problems so far. Here is my take, the Pitster is the top of the line with the upgrades they have taken the time and effort to change. The Polaris is the middle level option, costs more for less machine but you get a real warranty from a real company with a large dealer network and good resale value. Mine is the lowest option, smallest motor, no dealers, limited warranty but an entry price of $2500 or less. Pick your poison they are all "chinabuggy's" regardless of who's sticker is on the front. Good luck, your kids will have a blast and you will get some awesome memories to go with it!

Amen!! I think you hit the nail on the head. I picked up my kids pitster today. So I guess I'll find out soon. I think I'm leaving it boxed, so my boy who's almost 6 , can help assemble it. I guess I'll tell him Santa was lazy or too busy to finish the build. Can't wait till Christmas!! Hope he's big enough to reach the pedals. He rides dirt bike and quad so I know he can handle it, just hope he's not too small. Appreciate all the info on this forum.

At 6 he will be fine, our nieghbor is 4 and average size and he is just shy of the pedals. He has driven it with his dad next to him but he does have to stretch. You will be amazed at how fast they pick up driving skills. My daughter turned 9 in July and she is quite comfortable with oversteer/understeer, trailbraking, and threshold braking. When she is 16 and driving for real there may be a moment when all that matters in my wife and I's world is that this kid has a natural and proper response in a split second with a full size automobile. How many of today's female teenagers would you consider to be "skilled" drivers. Worth every freakin penny regardless of which model/manufacturer you choose!

Bye the way, her driving skills have been developed through using the same practice techniques I ran through at the Skip Barber school 20yrs ago. Great fun and maybe the only time she enjoy's "studying".

Guys thank you for the replys and information. It seems at times more research can create more stress making you feel like your never going to make the right decesion. :ride:

None the less I purchased a used RZR 170 all done up with all the goodies and up grades needed. My son is going to lose his mind when he sees it!!

Cannot wait!:)

Agreed, the physical size of the platform is perfect as is just needs a bigger motor and suspension. Would slide in nicely between the 170 and 570. Maybe call it the 270, or 370? Would def be cool and seems a real business opportunity for the company that is clearly the leader in sport SxS's. They must have quad motors already in existence that would fit the requirement.

I have to chime in here. I am a ATV dealer and I have the RZR 170 and I have received some of the new 150's

First off, the RZR 170 is Chinese all the way. All of Polari's kids atv's are made in China.
Second, The RZR 170 is not a Polaris, the Engine is made by Adly, and Yes they are Chinese. Taiwan to be specific.

My kids broke the 170 the second time they rode it. I eventually sold theres. I have ordered in a 150 from my distributor and these machines are VERY similar to the Polaris Adly. We are currently working on this 150 and we are throwing a TON of parts at it.

But I can tell you now there are MANY more performance parts available for the GY6 150 than for the Adly 170.

Guy they both are Fine machines, to Polaris is no Shining star of quality, and just because Polaris Touts made in the USA, does not mean it it. My 2012 $35,000 Harley has made in China all over the damn thing.

The Chinese companies are starting to get these ATV's figured out and hopefully they will make the BIG 6 get real on there prices.

we will run through these units until we get the perfect Setup. We are teaming up with MRP to get the complete package for these.

Welcome aboard, any info on these things is always appreciated. What is your impresson of the overall build quality of these units compared to the other off brand imports. I have to be honest that so far the machine has far exceeded my expectations. My expectations were pretty low to be honest, so far we have lots of hours on our unit with very few real issues. The chain tensioner is one spot I have never truly been happy with, it does work but it could certainly be better set up.

They are ok. Version one had transmission issues, so we waited until this year to dive into the 150 UTV. The chain tensioner on the RZR 170 is pretty shabby also.

The version 150 we have is made by LIL, and they are a ISO 9001 certified MFG. So there quality control is spot on.
Like I said we deal with all sorts of manufactures and I will probably get flamed to no end but Polaris is not at the top for quality, they just are not made to Honda standards. But in the same sentence the Honda UTV looks like a generator. And Polaris is the ONLY manufacture that even seems to have any interest in this market. I have new "Other brand" if you will UTV's in stock that will take the shirt off the Rhino and the Razor S. And they are built with the same parts. They are all running Delphi fuel injection, and they share many core parts from the same manufactures. Paying for a name is not always smart.

But the Razor 170 is in a niche and really the price is more than fair, the AKA Chinese version is not much cheaper. We sell this machine bone stock for $2999.99 and the Pitster is $3400.00, I know Pitster advertises the double front A-Arm, but it has less useful travel than the unit we carry and the RZR 170.

I will let you know how this unit goes, we are putting a whole host of CVT and Electronic related mods on this by Friday and we will see how it wakes up.

I do not comment much on forums, but when the whole Chinese American thing comes up, I have to stop the mis-information. Guys they are all made in China, China is the next Japan, they are all leaving Japan for China because the quality is now getting better and labor is cheaper. Our new Junk will come from India. And as I said before the farther I took apart my $35k Street Glide the more "MADE IN CHINA" I SAW AND THE MORE PISSED IT GOT.

But just because is Says Polaris, Harley or Arctic Cat does not mean it is made in the USA because it is just a flat out lie. Oh and I am sure most of you know . Arctic Cat, ,Kawasaki, Suzuki kids atv's are built by Kymco. The only manufacture that build there own ATV's in house are Honda and YAMAHA. And the Honda comes form Korea and the Yamaha comes from China.

The Chinese influx is good, it is going to force the big 6 manufactures to lower there prices to a real level. Hell $18 grand for a UTV dirt should not stick to it. But Hisun and Odes and a few other manufactures int the US now are not kidding and they are building some GREAT stuff. The new Odes 800 Delphi Fuel Injected 800 is an absolute animal, I am impressed with anyone trying. Maybe it will get Yamaha up off there tail. And push Polaris to be a little cheaper.

No, it is still under the back just like Polaris put it. We are moving it. We just finished it a few minutes ago. We have been all day Testing clutches, Variators, springs, weights Etc. We found the match, it has enough power to do doughnuts on the pavement and it tops out around 34 mph, with some left. I will call it dialed in.

But it really needs heavier slider weights. I am running 17 gram rollers and 11 gram sliders, I need 18 gram sliders. This is a BAD rig the kids better love it.
Now time for bigger carb and big bore kit and exhaust.
