So I KNOW this has been talked about thousands of times but I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for.
I'm in the market to trade my '13 xp900 in on a '17 or '18 xp1000 4. My question is how is the reliability on the turbo vs the non turbo? I just can decide if I want a turbo or not and the reliability is my main concern. As far as the power aspect goes I don't think I need the turbo but it's more of a "want" thing. Lol. Most of the riding I do is in Utah in the mountains and I tend to go slower than most. I like to see the scenery vs going 80. But with that said I do go to the dunes in the spring and fall so I would need the power. I also do a lot of riding in Moab so I'm not sure how the turbo is in crawling.

I'd like anyone's pro's and cons of each.

After I posted this I came across a thread that scares the hell out of me..they say the low gear has increased by 24% now and it's bad for belt in slow crawling conditions..that is 80% of my riding..so now I don't know what to do..I really wanted a 4 seater but if I can't crawl/slow I don't

You're kind of in a pickle here Joe as Low range in any new XP4 is terrible for crawling. The issue can be fixed but will require some transmission work. I know its aggravating to spend that much money just to have to spend more to fix it. I can feel your pain, we are thinking of acquiring an XP4 since we have grandkids coming on.

Man.. this really sucks then. Lol. I don't feel like changing or even worse buying belts every time I go on a ride with a brand new rig. Hell my '13 900 has 2300 miles and still has the factory belt. I have never had to change the belt on this machine once. Lol.

Yup the highlifter is the only 4 seater with good gearing...

Well how is the gearing in the general 4?

What are you calling trail riding? Some folks describe that as 5-30 mph, others think that's mostly speeds that don't register on your speedo, (myself included). The Turbo will be fine in Low for the first description, as long as you don't put it in a bind at the lower speeds and High range WILL be more fun in the dunes. The HL will work better for the second description and will run 30mph in Low but it's gonna be turning quite a few rpm's.
Hope this helps, Carl

My 2. If you are riding with kiddos in the back don't get a turbo. The heat sucks especially when you ride dunes or faster terrain. Its bad enough in the front of it. This last trip to glamis was 96 out the heat inside was bad. 3 people in our group with turbos were at heat exhaustion. My wife was under the ac and didn't look well for a few hours.
Needless to say project insulate everywhere is under way.
If you were looking at a 2 seat I would go with a turbo.

There are a few misconceptions in this thread. The '17 XPT4 is geared lower than the 1k. It seems to be geared similarly to the '16 HLs. I run 33" BFGs and it's a rock crawling beast. I would like a bit more gear but don't want to go into the transmission. Been talking with Airdam Clutches and over the winter that's the direction I'm going.

"we have exactly what you need sir, replacing your OEM primary and secondary with our billet version will net you an impressive gain on the slower speeds and the throttle response. with our setup, our primary utilizes a smaller bearing diameter in the primary to allow the belt to ride lower in the primary and subsequently ride higher in the secondary. this will net you nearly a 20% gear reduction in the take-off ratio of the clutch. meaning when the clutch engages, your clutches starting ratio will be in a much lower rate, in order to help you slow speed crawl much easier, help you navigate big rocks and while you are crawling along the dash still read -0- mph meaning you can crawl super slow and have the assurance that starting in that lower gear ratio you can have so much better throttle response and clamping force. with the added gains of faster acceleration, much more balanced clutching, so when you get off the rocks and want to hammer down in the trails, this setup will put the power to the ground impressively well."

I have a 16 XP4 highlifter edition and live in Utah as well. I just spent the weekend in Moab and did Moab rim, cliffhanger, and hells revenge. The gearing is awesome. One guy on our group has the 2 seater gold rock crawler. I was very impressed with that machine. It has a 55% gear Reduction in low and the shorter wheel base. There was a couple instances he was better than me due to the shorter wheelbase. I run stock clutch. It's great in Moab or in the mountains. I live Eagle Mountain if you are close and want to take a look at it before you decide.

Ive ran both an xp4 and own an xpt4 and they are both great. If i didnt do dune trips and wasn't a power junkie I'd buy a HL xp4 and swap the tires as they come with some nice extras already installed. But that being said you cant beat the smile the turbo puts on your face

I wonder what the starting ratio is of the XPT clutches compared to that of the XP1K clutches... the clutches are a good but different in size so it may be fairly significant.
