Xp4 wont start after belt change

Blew a belt in the dunes. Rzr stalled a couple times loading and unloading with spare belt. I got home and pulled both clutches to remove debris. Once I put everything back together it won't start. Turns over and tries to start but won't catch. Any ides? I pulled the air filter and let it run open box just to make sure it had air, appears to have spark, not sure if it is getting gas...

Any help is appreciated!

I'll check when I get home, but I thought I heard it turn on last night.

Did you by chance turn the motor over clockwise by the clutch when changing the belt? If so it may have jumped cam timing.

You will need to put the motor to top dead center, and inspect cam timing. Usually the exhaust cam jumps a tooth or two.

It sounds like the fuel pump comes on. It almost started, backfired. Sounds like a timing issue...

It seems like Nate's suggestion makes sense. After we tried to get the old belt debris out from the clutches in the dunes it ran pretty crappy. I was able to get it back home, but it died twice pulling it into the house and up on the trailer. The fuel pump sounds like its coming on... Anything else I can check without pulling the head off?

Ahh Man U broke it messing around on the hill, to much playing with that 1000. If you got fuel, air, spark. Timing sounds like possibility, valves to tight? Sorry, doesn't sound like a quick fix

Nate, I don't doubt your knowledge but I find that pretty damn surprising... Can you explain that one a little further? How does turning the crank cause the timing belt to jump teeth?

I read all the forums just to pick up knowledge cause I figure that even though I have a RZR 800, they are all basically the same.

But this scenario about turning the motor backwards sounds pretty wild that it can screw up the timing. If this is really possible, can this happen only on the XP4, or are other RZR's prone to have this happen?

This is only a problem with the prostar motors. The tensioner will only apply the proper pressure when the motor is turning in the correct direction. When rotated backwards slack is created in the chain and it allows the exhaust cam to jump. ALWAYS TURN MOTOR COUNTER CLOCKWISE BY THE CLUTCH!!!!

Nate,

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, now if only you could work on your timing...

The funny part is you would think POLARIS would mention something about this in the manual... but no.

So I took the rzr into the dealership. They told me Nate's theory wasn't probable, after an hour of troubleshooting they decided to check the timing. Sure enough the exhaust was off by two teeth. Guess Nate was right as usual. Hope everyone else learns from my mistake!

Next time I have my belt cover off I'm taking a sharpie and drawing a big ol <---- arrow on the primary!

Think of it this way, when you rotate the motor backwards, instead of the slop being in the chain on the chain tensioner side of the motor, its now created on the opposite side of the motor (front of the engine) where there is no tensioner to take up the slack. I've seen it happen on one of my own cam changes and can reproduce it while watching it with the valve cover off even with the tensioner in. Like Nate said, ALWAYS ROTATE YOUR PRIMARY COUNTER CLOCKWISE. This can also occure sometimes when you just shut the RZR off. If your tensioner is weak, you have a stretched chain or both, it can jump if it shuts off right at the moment its coming up on a compression stroke, then the engine wants to kick backward for a split second. Thats also happend to me and i didn't know it until i was 375 miles from home...
