Hello,

I am getting very close to buying an XP 4 1000, and with several lightly used 2014 and 2015 models available, I wanted to see what I'd be losing going with a '14, or '15 over a new 2016 model. I've found scattered info on here and couldn't find a thread that covered this info all in one place. The only real issue I've found to buy newer so far is the old clutch cover design on the 2014 model. But, I believe you can update that for about $250, right? Thanks for the help...

I have a 2014 xp1k4 that I bought in Feb of 2014. I have done nothing to the machine performance wise, no new belt housing, no clutch. I run 31" truck tires on 15" beadlocks and carry about 300lbs of cargo plus passengers. I have gone through one belt at 1700 miles. I know the 2015 got the plastic carrier in the front diff while the 14's have a metal one. Other than the clutch upgrade and the plastic pieces in the front diff I dont think much has changed. If I was doing it again I may entertain buying a used one as they are getting so ridiculous in price on a new one. I paid $25,600 for mine otd with front and rear windshields and a roof. Had I waited or bought used I may have been able to outfit mine and keep it under $30k. That being said I have more in it than that and dont regret any of it. When I am ready to buy another one I will be purchasing new again as I have seen some of crap these guys put their machine through. I would look for a gently used 2014 and save the dough for a cage or other upgrades.

I own a 14 , did the clutch cover swap. The 14 dont have the seat belt safety crap on them . Not a hard thing to fix . But just a small difference . Seems like the 14s have less problems with front diff noise as well. I could be wrong but seems the problems started 15-16 ish.... I bought used , saved about 4-5K over a new one

2014 has the old style clutch cover and belt, as well as the metal carrier in the front differential.

2015 has upgraded front axles, a plastic carrier in the front diff, upgraded CVT cover/belt, and the 15 mph speed limiter if the seatbelt is disconnected(easily bypassed). The seat slider lever also is slightly better. The tie rod ends were changed to an automotive style end vs the ATV style end previous RZR's have had. Corresponding changes to the tie rods and the knuckle as well. The front portion of the frame is slightly different too, where the upper A arms front bolt goes through, and where you would mount a winch fairlead.

2016 is basically the same as the 2015, except the rear lower part of the frame is slightly different(requiring a different skid plate), and the rear door frames have tabs for the seatbelts, which have to be changed before adding an aftermarket seat(s) in the rear.

Other than that it is graphics and colors.

Great info Chris and Marc . If I had to do it all again , look for a '14 that has been gently abused . Less problems , more speed , better pricing . I have added the '15 cover but use the '14 belt with no problems . Be it a '14 or '15 , make the shock up-grade from Shock Therapy one of the first things you do after 4 point harnesses . The car will do any thing you ask it and not beat you to death , the ride is amazing ! . HAPPY HUNTING !

the 14' also is faster top end, I had mine at 82mph stock

15/16 only do 71mph or so with stock ECM

14' has no cat in muffler an no O2 sensor in header

15/16 has cat and O2 sensor. It also is much hotter around bed area, which means your ice in your cooler will melt faster.

If you get a 14', make sure it has the 15' clutch upgrade kit or install yourself if it doesn't. Cost is only around $265 and comes with new belt

One thing i noticed was an improved door latch with a rubber piece inside of the latch. It eliminates the play in the door. In my '14, the doors have too much play after you shut it. With the rubber in there it makes it a snug fit. I like it so much I upgraded all 4 latches from parts on ebay. .
