Anyone consider using old fashioned CB radios?

 

Cb's suck in the woods.

I do find it interesting that CBs have not become more popular on SxS. I use VHF/UHF like most others. It seems like I remember that CB transmissions during logging operations was the go to communication. I thought it penetrated the trees and cover more, I could be wrong. I might do some research on that. Maybe I am crazy.

I do know that VHF (MURS frequencies) travels better than UHF (GMRS frequencies) in the woods with the same power setting. I have tested this many times and always make sure the attenna is tuned perfect for each before the test. MURS legally requires a lower power output, but these test were conducted using the same power setting. While deer hunting, I can talk to my father at home on MURS and he can not hear me at all on GMRS. I always thought this was why folks liked to use the business bands on VHF for car to car communication.

 

Most East coast riders use uhf over vhf because it is better in the woods and mountains.Ask Brad with SxS Radios. His set up comes with coax,antenna and mount and the radio is programmed..

 

VHF travels better distance, UHF penetrates obstacles better

I think CB isn't very common because there isn't a cheap handheld option. Before all the Beaofang's got here, most people used a quality FRS handheld like the old motorola talkabout if they used anything at all.

 

Uniden makes a handheld for under $50.

 

We run a SXS Radios TYC. Works great everyone in our group runs them. just get a cheap speaker off amazon to plug into it and its loud.

 

I went with UTVcom for intercom/radio. Bought race frequency radio, still have to get a license. So far intercom works great haven't tested the radio with anyone yet. Was a few hundred cheaper than RR set up.
