Anybody keep a trail welder back in your truck? My diesel has two batteries that I could use. I am considering either making or buying one. Thoughts?
Depend upon what broke I could either haul the batteries and welder to the broke rzr or bring it back to the trailhead.

I have been stick welding for 35+ years so I don't need Mig or Flux Core...

I am the guy that they joke about "carrying a full Snap On box with me" but I prefer to be prepared.

Thanks

I keep a miller maxstar 150 in the trailer with a small bottle of argon so I have the option to tig weld if the broken part is way to thin to stick weld. I have it set up with a 110 plug but it can be set up for 220 by just switching out the plug. Fortunately only needed it once but it allowed us to make a parking lot fix and not ruin a weekend

I have a 110V lincoln mig with flux core I can use if the trailer is hooked to shore power, but I don't pack it for just in case. Usually I have a project that I didn't quite finish or a specific task in mind when it gets loaded.

I have seen my uncle use a pair of jumper cables off a Kenworth battery to make an emergency field weld to get a truck back to the shop once. I would not trust my welding skills to be able to duplicate what I saw him do.

I don't know how the SxS batteries would fare. But, I've seen video of peeps in Jeeps arc welding on the trail with a couple batteries in series and jumper cables.

We do mostly rock crawling. I've never felt the need to bring a welder. But if I did, I might consider a small oxy/acetylene setup. When I was 18, I built my first motorcycle trailer with an oxy/acetylene torch and hanger wire. The welds looked like s*** but they were solid. LOL

I don't expect SxS batteries to work. I will take the two batteries out of my diesel truck..

I have an ESAB Rogue 180 stick welder that I can run off of my Honda EU7000is if we happen to have the RV with us. The Honda mounts on the back of the camper. I don't have a toy hauler so we have to take two trucks which right now is expensive. I guess if I had one of those Powerboost F150s with built in generator I could carry a small mig with me.

Carrying a trail welder in your truck for on-the-go repairs can be a wise choice, utilizing the power from your diesel truck's two batteries. Consider factors like portability and power output when selecting or building a trail welder. Being prepared with this equipment can provide peace of mind and save time during off-road adventures.
