Thermostat/Radiator question

Ok this is basic I know but I'm trying to understand a problem I had yesterday.

When does the thermostat open the coolant line? 185? It was cold as hell yesterday (around 10 degrees) and had to go rescue a friends quad out of the deep woods. When I was sitting I would get heat but when moving engine temps would drop into the mid 160s and go cold again. It took like an hour before the heat was on consistantly.

Maybe it was like that all along but I thought I might try to get some insight as to what was going on with it going hot/cold for a while.

Thermostats do not always stay closed for a while and open up and stay open...
That does happen in moderate weather, but in cold weather they will open when the coolant in the engine is warm enough and close as the newly admitted cold coolant enters. It is interesting to watch a coolant flush machine in operation as it does display this in a manner that can be observed. The open/closed cycles will eventually stop when the entire operating system is near maximum temperature. Then the cooling fan starts working and the battle continues ha ha.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. This would be consistant with what I saw yesterday. When it hit a consistant coolant temp of whatever its set at, then it stayed open and the heat was there from then on.

So then in reality there is no problem this is just the way the system works? Anybody with a heater see this same thing with their RZR? I can also assume then this is no issue with the machine?

:doh:Sounds to me like a weak thermostat A weak thermostat will allow coolant to circulate before it reaches the set temp. While sitting still you you have no air moving to cool it until the fan kick on at it set temp which is normally higher that set point of the thermostat While you are traveling air is moving even when fan is off HTH

Sorry I didn't realize you were talking about a heater ,thought you were talking about the whole cooling system:doh:
