The PROBLEM you are about to have! Everybody should read this!

If you haven't already had this problem you will unless you never get into water or mud up to your floor. On a recent trip to the dunes in oklahoma I had an overheating problem. the beginning of the problem was an intermittent fan. Not knowing about the issue with the relay under the floor I bought and installed a UTV fan override kit from stewarts and continued riding. My temp still got higher than it should but when it would get up to about 210-215 I would just stop and let it cool back down. It would take 20-30 minutes of hard running to get on the high side of where I thought it should be. So after I got back home and started researching the issue on here I found out about the relay problem under the floor here's what it looked like when I took it out.:rm_thumbdown:

Pretty brilliant idea putting a relay in thre harness under the floor where it can get wet. Upon furtuhur investigation I have also developed a drip at the weep hole so guess the over heating messed up the impeller and seal so now I gotta replace that too.

So if you haven't had a problem with this yet and you ride in any water at all you will. Might want to pull your skid and check it or better yet relocare it to a higher area which is what I plan to do. I'm not sure what this releay is even for. I put a jumper wire in its place and the fan works fine. There is already a relay for the fan in my fusebox on the firewall . seems redundant. Must be there for some reason but really really bad place for it. Just a heads up to help head off a problem before it happens to you.

Do the XPs have these in the same spot? If so where would you move it?

Might try some of that plastic dip that home depo or lows sell the stuff you dip tool handles in that should protect it for you mud n water guys
The only issue with Plasti Dip is that is can hold water in if it gets between the plastic and the terminal. For years they used a similar product on fire apparatus to cover all major electrical connections that were external and exposed to the elements. We found more often than not that the connections were corroded worse than being left unprotected.

What we found works the best is Trucklite grease. Only problem there is if you run in the sand and mud a lot, the grease will attract the sand etc. It will still protect it, just be covered in debris.

I would think the best solution would be to relocate it to a dryer location. Making sure of course that your connections are completely sealed and water tight.

You said that you had fluid dripping out of your weep hole. After you replace the seal, take a 3/16 (think) rivet remove the inside, tap it into the weep hole (leave plenty sticking out), cut off the flared end with hack saw and put clear tubing on it, and run it up to your snorkle height (or to a higher location if no snorkle). You will still be able to check if leaking by looking at the tubing if it has any fluid in it. Water, mud, and sand will enter the weep hole and wear out the carbon seal on your water pump. When you replace it you will see what I am talking about, it happened to me. Also when replacing the radiator fluid there is a air vent bleed at the 90 on the motor behind the pass seat by the dip stick.

I think I read somewhere that they fixed this for the 2012's. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong...

Bruce, might want to check this thread. It is a ckt breaker and supplies power to the fan thru the fan relay. Jim

I ride in very muddy and deep water up to my waste. Never had the problem in 3 yrs. I also pull my skid any clean it after those muddy rides so everything isn't sitting in that mud. preventive maintenance goes a long way. One more tip I love on mine is the gauges and added a light that turns on when the fan comes on. This way if you ever notice your temp. getting high and the light doesnt come then pull over right away.

thanks Jim , wish I had seen this sooner would have saved me alot of trouble.

I know at least one person who had this issue cost them a rebuild. Circuit breaker failed due to water intrusion and the machine overheated with an inexperienced driver at the wheel. Can't blame the damage on the circuit breaker location of course since im sure it was flashing "HOT" but had it been in a different location it likely wouldn't have failed.

How you gonna spray it with the skid on? Not sure about other models but my 2011S shuts down (luckily) when it gets up to about 235-40 ish. Its happened to me twice now. First time I cut a hose at the water pump and this time when the circuit breaker failed. I think everyone will agree this was a pretty stupid idea to put any type of unsealed electrical part under the machine where it is sure to fail. Not sure what the thought was with that move. I dont ride in alot of water but do cross a creek now and then.I avoid most mud like the plauge but have gotten off in a mud hole or two when there was no other way around. I always spend alot of time cleaning after each ride and check my machine over good. I pull the skid after a few rides or if I get into some really bad mud but still had an issue with the relay. I didn't even know it was there until this happened or I sure as hell would have moved it from day 1 . Nothin like shortening the life of your engine like excessive heat. So now I have to do a rebuild on the water pump as well not sure if the overheating this time caused it to start to drip or just a coincindence. I would have thought it would lasted longer than 1400 miles but it is what it is. I'll also go ahead and do an oil change since overheating will affect oil performance too. Probably overkill but getting close to time anyway.
