Steering Hard / Alignment Issues

First time posting so sorry if this is in the wrong thread.

A few months back my brother hit the underside of the rzr on something hard and ever since then, the power steering has been a little harder than it should be. Took it to a shop and they couldn't find anything structurally wrong with it. Took it on a ride and other than the steering being a little harder than normal, everything ran fine. I brought it back home and jacked it up to put new wheels on it and found that the tires are pointed in 2 different directions (toe way out). When steered straight the toes are out. When turned to the left the inner tire is pointed hard to the left while the outer tire isn't pointed much to the left at all. Same goes for when it is turned to the right. I am hesitant to bring it back to the same shop because they didn't find this problem when I brought it to them last time.

Any ideas on what this could be? See attached photos. The first 2 are when the wheel is straight. The second 2 are when the wheel is turned to the right.

Are all you tie rods straight? any bends in them will mis-align your wheels, make sure their straight first then check for bent A-arms/frame, RZRs come setup with some toe out and have some ackerman angle for better cornering .... but yours seems to have a lot of toe out that would mess with your ackerman angle and your ability to turn sharply

I would thoroughly check all steering and A-arms for bends and if they are all good I would re-align it with a more neutral alignment (straighter) and see how the steering is.

Good luck

1st of all, you need to have the machine at ride height to check the alignment. Its going to be way off with it jacked up like you have it in the pics. Take it out ride it around for few minutes, maybe hit a few bumps to get the suspension to settle back to normal ride height. Pay attention to how the steering wheel is turned when the machine is going straight. Then pull it on something flat, make sure the steering wheel is turn as it was when you were driving it going straight, get out try not to bounce it around too much when getting out. Then lay down and measure from center of the front tires in the back and and then in the front the same way. Whatever the difference is will be your toe. They normally recommend 1/8" toe out, so the measurement should be 1/8" more in the front than in the back of the front tires. If you have more or less, loosen the tie-rod lock nuts and adjust to get the 1/8" toe out. I highly recommend strapping the steering wheel so it can't turn when adjusting the toe. As for the hard steering, that could be in the power steering unit itself, I have read that some have had problems with the eps after hitting trees, rocks or deep ruts hard with 1 tire. But I would look everything over underneath the rzr really well, a-arms, a-arm mounting tabs, tie-rods inner and outer. When you are driving on flat ground does the machine pull to one side or the other if you turn loose of the steering wheel?
Does it turn sharper one way or the other?

Since the initial impact that caused the steering to be a little more difficult than it should be, probably about 60 miles have been put on it. In that time it drove straight. It doesn't pull to one side but I think it does turn tighter to one side than the other. I can't speak for what the measurements are. This is the first I noticed that it might have an alignment problem. When it's set back down it straightens out but how off it is when it's jack up is alarming to me. I've been in a truck before that had steering component issues where everything was fine until it wasn't. I'm worried the same thing might happen in this. As for where it got hit, it wasn't on one particular side. It was on the part in between where the lower control arms connect to the frame.

Well if it doesn't seem to pull to either side, then I suggest checking the alignment and seeing where you are at then. Also there have been a few reports of the steering wheel not being clocked correctly from the factory. Meaning it will turn more turns to one side than the other. It should turn exactly the same both directions. Also the overall tie-rod length should be the same on both sides, when properly aligned with nothing bent.

bnbrzr2,

My RZR: (2) 2014 RZR XP1000
How does your "other" RZR handle?
I would park them side x side and start comparing parts & dimensions.

I tried to remove my steering wheel, by tapping steering shaft lightly wouldn’t budge, ordered a steering wheel puller later went for a ride and my steering was stiff, probably from Tapping on the steering shaft ,when I did pull the wheel off with The puller and re-centered Retorqued and steering was easy again maybe your brother-in-law pushed from the force of impact on the steering wheel caused it to be stiff.
