I've seen these mentioned on the forum here. i went on a tow call last night that resulted in one fatality. I'm buying one of these for my business and personal use. i regularly go places where i'm 40-100 miles from the closest cell reception. I understand a lot of people don't like the subscription price, but whats the peace of mind worth? (priceless in my opinion). if nothing else, people with elderly family members who travel a lot should look into one of these. The tow call i went on last night involved an elderly couple lost on a dirt road WAY past BFE. they got stuck, and the old man stepped out to see what happened and didn't realize he was hanging over a cliff. he fell down, and his wife wasn't able bodied enough to do anything to help. they stayed there for 3 days until some lion hunters happened upon them. the wife was ok, but the husband had expired. If they had one of these, the husband would still be alive. You never know what might happen to you, or what you might come upon when your out riding in remote areas. I don't sell these, i'm not endorsed but anyone for these, i just think its well worth the investment.

I used to take solo rides twenty or more miles out into the woods. Always had mine with me. Still use it on every ride. To many places cell phones are no good. One push of a button on the spot notifies someone you need help, another sends a 911 signal for help with you location included. Plus if you get the right subscription you get $10,000 FLIGHT FOR LIFE insurance.

I look at it as cheap life insurance.

I ride solo a lot so I take mine on every trip.

My only fear is that i get hurt to the point that I can not push the help button. So I pay for the service that will allow other people to track me on the computer. At least this way if I don't make it home they will know where to pick up my life less body.

Nice info. Thanks for sharing. Sorry about the couple. That is sad.

I use it and know at least 20 people that use them. I use it for everything. Car trips, Razor riding, my motorcycle and especially my plane. Anyone you want to can find or track you and you can call for help if something happens.

I will be using it tomorrow. Here is my link. I will be on it at 0730 Tucson, AZ time. Same as Pacific time right now. It will track me and mark my location every 10 min. and when I land it will show you where I parked my plane within about 6'-10'.

When we go to Utah every year all our friends can follow our track every day. If you don't want someone to know where you are at don't give them the link.

I bought my son a SPOT (17 year old) that rides a Raptor 727 and desert races. I purchased the auto tracking and he uses it ALL THE TIME. He usually rides alone and I know within 10 minutes of his last location. IMO, you have to buy the auto tracking to be worth it!

My only complaint: It should show current speed with each GPS location. It only sends coordinates every 10 minutes "IF" moving. This is ok if hiking, but on a quad / utv 10 minutes at 60+ miles /hour (he averages 40+ desert riding and tops at over 90mph), his last GPS location could be 10+ miles from his actual location. And yes, if he is incapacitated and can't push the 911 button I only know his last location within 10 minutes. But hey, its better than nothing as a parent of an active offroad teenager!!!

I was reading on them and the one I looked at said it recorded in 2.5, 5, 10, and kept going up in minutes. For when one is in motion.

Hi Bryan,

It would still show exactly where he is if he crashed just like in my plane. If I had a heart attack while flying and died and then crashed the Spot will keep transmitting. You'll have lots of those markers all in one place.
I'll be flying this morning. When I land and park I don't shut it off. I'll be away from the plane for about 1 hr.
Take a look at all the markers in one place and it will show exactly where I'm parked.
So no I couldn't hit the help button if if I died suddenly, but all the markers will then be in one location.

If your son crashed and couldn't push his button you would know he has a problem because he would stop moving and all the markers would be in one place and you could drive right to him.

Do you have any recommendations on setting-up the unit? I just got mine...

I had the Spot for about 2 years but only went places where I would potentially need it maybe once or twice a year. The monthly subscription became too expensive to justify so I recently cancelled it. Hope that wasn't a mistake. If Spot had a subscription at a lower cost for people who occasionally use it that would be better for me.

Update: When I cancelled the subscription they offered a lower monthly price to stay. That further reinforced my decision to cancel. If a company can't take care of their regular paying customers then they don't deserve my business.

We use our Spot for everything. When I fly my plane , when we ride in the Rzr, if we take a trip I throw it on the dash and everyone knows where we are and when we are getting close to the end. They know where we eat, park and sleep. Put in a teens car and know where they are all the time.
You can use it skiing on a person, boating and fishing... ect..
It has many uses. My wife and I ride alone a lot so this makes safety a little better if we get in a bind.

Depending on what plan you have you can set the record post times. i.e. 2.5 minutes, 10 minutes, ect...

Since I fly a lot I have many friends that have Spot. I used to sell them. Sold cases of them. (only 5 per case :))

Guess I'll keep mine for a while at least. After a few emails back and forth with Spot customer service they gave me a significant discount. They said this was the first price increase they've had. Well after checking my account they have had a few small increases prior to this one and once I pointed that out to them they agreed on giving me the discount.
