Someone know something about spring colors?

I think I screwed up. (man, if I had a nickel for every time I said that)

When I installed my mid travel kit, I sent my Elka shocks out to have them checked out. When they sent them back, I had them send me some 250lb springs.

One set was red and the other black. The red set was about 10'ish inches long and the black set was about a foot long.

The red springs are larger in diameter (spring thickness)

Anyway, I put the red up front and the black on the rear. I think the coils are bottoming out. Is there any possibility I placed them backwards?

Seems like I either need longer or stiffer springs.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Mark

Yes, that’s exactly what they look like. My problem is in order to get the correct height and stiffness, I had to crank the springs down at least another inch on the front and two inches on the rear more than yours.

The coils IMO are so close together that when you hit a hard bump, they bottom out.

Any thoughts? Longer springs, more poundage?

I'm pretty sure I went 250's on the rear and the upper spring is something like 900....the front's are 275.

I wouldn't go by that photo, that's how they were out of the box and have been adjusted since....I think I'm around 45mm of upper thread showing to the locking ring.

Ok....I'll close my eyes and won't scroll back up....

Yes, there is a spring retainer between the two springs...not sure if the upper spring is generic for ELKA or not, they custom built these shocks for me based on the info I provided them with regards to weights and my type of riding.

Don't you have the RT +3 suspension? Yes, I know stock shocks are supposed to work, but maybe the overall spring is too short based on the ground clearance you desire...I suspect that's why they are cranked down for preload. Also, it doesn't appear you are using the RT lift kit, which puts the shock angle more vertical....that could be the difference as well.

Yes, I’m using the RT +3 kit. It comes with a lift kit but a bit different than the 2-3” you normally buy.

I was thinking the same thing about the length of the shocks. Perhaps I need shock adapters/spacers or longer shocks. I’ll call RT tomorrow and see what they suggest.

Thanks,

good point. the RT lift kit could help u. then u could back out the preload and help let the springs work properly.

....somethings not right, with that much preload on your ELKA shocks, there's no way they are going to perform nearly the way they were meant.

For the record, I love how my shocks perform....the rears are rebound adjustable.

Definitely call RT....they know their chit!!!!!!!!!! But don't send them pics until you get 'er all cleaned up!!!!!!!!! That's just embarrassing :scared2: :rofl3:
