We are looking at riding in Silverton around first of sept....can you ride Rzr S's there..? or is everything 50''? anyone have any info?

Yes, you can ride a RZR-S almost everywhere between Silverton and Lake City. Most of the trails are jeep trails, but many offer lots of challenges with rocks, steep climbs and water crossings. If you are licensed, you can drive and park in Lake City and Silverton. We licensed our RZR in Arizona and drove into both towns to poke around and eat lunches. The Silverton Police stopped and looked at our RZR and then just drove on. The next day, he didn't even slow down. We're very aware of speed limits and not acting stupid and had no problems at all.

Just out of curiosity where are you staying while there?

I got a buddy from AZ that went to Silverton with a group of the friends on licensed ATV, RZR's. Cop told them they get caught riding in town again they would all get tickets. You must of got hold of a different cop. They all packed up and left for the Paiute taking their tourist money with them.

Thanks dude, i had heard several issues with the 50'' limit....we have decided offically yet, as the trip isnt till sept, but we are taking a 5th wheel and plan to find a nice rv park or something, hopefully something close to trails. We are southern guys, first time to bring rzr out west. So any other input is welcome and appreciated!!!....how far are you from there phelps88?

Hey Matt,
My Boss rides out there a lot. Width isn't a issue, The RV Park he camps at is nice. He has to trailer it to the trails, he's been told even licensed you cant ride on the Roads, which doesn't help us Arkansans anyway. I can get some info on places to ride and camp from him. We are gonna go out there sometime, just don't know when.

The Castle Lakes Campground is nice. We stayed there for week last Labor Day. Its right on the Cinnamon Pass road so there is lots of access to everywhere. Its about 7 miles to Lake City and if you're not licensed...well...take the truck. You can do just about all the trails between Lake City and Silverton without being licenses. You will need a Colorado ATV sticker that you can get locally.

I live North of Canon City, Co...about 170 miles or so from Lake City.

If you're into dry camping, the old Eureka town site is just northeast of Silverton and has lots of space for setting up camp. Very well maintained dirt road. No need to trailer your RZR to the trail head, you're already on it!
Remember to rinse the mud off your undercarriage and wheels regularly. The chemicals in the soil will pit your chrome and leave cool yellow spots on the frame if left on for to long!
Lots of great places to ride, more photo opportunities than you have memory card space for and the best part... for the girls anyway, is the strategically spaced toilets along all the trails!

Its a coming challenge with the cops. We haven't had any problems so far. In Moab the cops told us the real key is be street legal, be insured and don't be stupid. Yup, the guy doing donies on his ATV in town got busted. The rest of us just enjoy the ride and behave. There is a bill in the Colorado Legislature this year to license ATVs and UTVs. Its passed the Transportation Committee thus far, a few more steps to go. The way I see it, if the state needs money, I'll pay for the tags to have the right to drive where I want in my RZR!

Castle Lakes campground was less than $40 a night with full hookups and yup, you are on the Alpine loop...so just ride from camp. Beats dry camping. They have bathrooms and showers if you don't have a self contained trailer or don't want to mess with it.

I just made reservations for a cabin in Lake City. I rode up there last summer but didnt get a chance to finish it b/c I got High Altitude Pulmonary Edema and ended up in the local hosp. for the next 3 days. Anyways heading back up there this June, I was told last yr by the cops in Lake City, that they will allow you to ride fm the trail head to your cabin w/out being licensed for the rode but if its licensed you can ride any where in town. He also said that Silverton was not ATV friendly and will ticket you if you ride into town. Hinsdale County (where lake city is) depends on the tourism and is 98% National forest and needs the $$ to support it so they look the other way in most cases or so the local county mounty said.

Matt, Forgot about Castle Rocks, nice place and easy access to the trails.
Go to Funtreks.com and order the third edition of Colorado Backroads & 4-wheel Drive Trails. Matt and Charles did a great job with this new edition and is in full color. Used it last year up there and was perfect.
If your going to be there in Sept make sure you have warm clothes on the trip. We have been snowed on in Aug and by 4pm you had better be heading back to camp. Great trails and some place you don't want to miss.

I go to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival every year in June and we usually take a day to drive thru one of the passes (unfortunately in a 4x4 Suburban, not a RZR). We've done Ophir, Imogene, and some others and its absolutely spectacular. There's also lots of abandoned silver mines in the area which are fun to explore. Its truly amazing country. The one we haven't done is Black Bear. Supposed to be one of the most difficult 4x4 trails in the country, and drops down into Telluride via a couple of beautiful waterfalls and the country's first electric powerplant situated on a cliff right next to a waterfall. There pictures and details on the web you could check out. apparently its only open a month or two per year - the rest of the year its snowed in - June's too early, but August/Sept timeframe might be OK. Black Bear would be perfect for a RZR, but the only thing is that its one-way from the "million dollar highway" over to Telluride, so you'd have to have someone pick you up in Telluride with a trailer.

Hey guy's Keep in mind that even though a local cop told you you can ride in certian towns in Colorado, it is not legal to ride an avt or dirt bike (unless the dirt bike is lic.) on ANY improved road in Co. If a county sheriff or state trooper catch you you will be ticketed, and face them taking your atv. Do I think it right, HELL NO! But I have seen this happen 2 times in the last 7 years I have lived here. Co. DOES NOT honor any other states lic. for offroad vehicles, 2 or 4 wheeled.

@ weeks ago I ran into a AZ game warden while wheelin down there. He had came to Co. to ride and was on a AZ street legal ATV. He was ticketed by a CO. cop. Needless to say it left a really bad taste in his mouth for us folks from CO.

So where do you find info on off roading in Wyoming? During 25 years of Harleys we often did the Snowy Range...at least that's what we called it, the highway between Encampment and Baggs. Then on to Rock Springs, Jackson, Yellowstone, over the Bear's Tooth the the Bighorns and down to Sheridan and across to Sturgis. It was a fabulous ride. Now that its RZR time...we'd like to Wyoming but don't have info on where the trails are. Would appreciate any info. Thanks!!

We stay at the Mountain Home side in WYCOLO. There are trails between there and Centennial and all around Rob Roy reservoir. There are trails all along the Snowy Range road and ever a ATV\UTV only trail at the top. South of Mountain Home you can "sneak over to the CO side and do lots of trails over there and go to the Waldon sand dunes if thats your thing. We purchase the CO OHV stickers to stay legal but thats all we spend there. I am the first to admit some of the CO riding is spectacular but we have done most of it and riding in a friendly environment is our priority now. I am in AZ now for 3 months and just spent the weekend riding with about 30 friends from here. None of them will ever roll a tire in CO again unless something changes. Sorry about stealing the thread maybe some other WY folks can elaborate with a new topic.

We've been going to Silverton since 1979. Things have changed a lot but it is still probably the best place to ride I've ever been. Started out tent camping at Howardsville until it was sold and fenced off. We now stay at the r/v park in Silverton and trailer to Eureka which is a great place to camp. Starts getting cold in Sept.
Be prepared for any kind of weather, heat, cold, rain, snow, maybe all in the same day!
