Can't keep your girl friend off your shifter? Guess what I found out. A 1/2 inch NF die will cut threads on your shifter shaft. (Possibly some meteric size will also?). Took my shifter knob off. cut threads down to the first set of pinches in the shaft. Backed the die up. Carefully filed down part of the first pinched portions on the shaft. Cut threads about half way down through them. Theaded on the jam nut. Threaded on the insert (adapter). Put some thread locker in the threads of the Hurst shifter and threaded it on. Adjusted it and there you go! Many shifter knobs will fit this size so look around. Just need some flat black paint for my shaft in the morning and it will look great. Time 1.5 hours. Cost foo Hurst T 22.00$. Borrow a die!

Just go slow with the die and lots of lubrication with light oil. Clean the new threads and die as you go. Try and start the die as straight to the shaft as possible as the outside diameter of the shaft is not quite optimal. Tx Bri
PS remember lubrication (there is a special cutting compound you can get, I didn't use it but it should work well)

when i got home with my new rzr -- thats the first thing i grabbed -- i have a nice b&m t handle shifter just like the one you have there -- but saw how the factory one was put on , and desided not to bother .

nice job -- good patience !!

Oh yeah I changed out my shifter last year. The metal is pretty soft. I was kinda of surprised at how easy it was to thread.

well i brought home the die, and did some shifter modding......

the set we have at work has a "starter die" and a standard die. the only difference is that the starter die has about 3 less threads to start easier. worked like a charm!

got the threads cut. i went down to the second pinch hump. did a test fit, and i'm waiting on the shifter to dry and it will be good to go!

it's not much, but it's the first mod (of mine) on the rzr!!

I may have to try this. I installed the shifter I have by putting rubber hose over the shaft, put the shifter on and drilled a small hole thru the threaded portion of the shifter and the shaft. I then tapped a pin thru the hole. The hole was tight fit for the pin. I trimmed the pin with my dremel and then screwed the jam nut on the threads. It's a pistol grip shifter. I'll get some pics later.

I don't have any automotive stuff but want upgrade.

I do woodwork and make stuff here and there. There's a walnut handle on my floor jack. Years of hand oil on it.

I pick up dunnage at the local Lumber Liquidator. they thro these away. Some purple heart would be cool.
