Samsung Tab A for navigation

I’ve been using my IPhone 12 for navigation with Onxoffroad and ride command. I want to go to a Samsung tab A 8” or the A7 which is 8.7”. I was just a Best Buy and the associate was about as knowledgeable as I am. My knowledge of computers, tablet, etc. and $5 wouldn’t buy you a cup of coffee. He said I would need a data plan to use it. It is my understanding, I think I read it on here, that I upload the maps before my ride when I have wi-fi available and then when your out riding the gps in the tablet keep you on track. Some insight into this from anyone running a tablet would be greatly appreciate!!! Thanks… Mike. I have a 2017 XP 1000.

I believe the tab a has gps built in. You might double check the specs online. And you are correct, if you upload your maps and save them while you have wifi, it will work on the trail. I have a tablet I use for the same thing. It's not a Samsung, its a Levono android tablet. I use it for maps and Bluetooth music.

Whoa, I hope you didn't buy it. You need more then just a GPS for good trail navigation. You also want to look for a built in gyro and compass, so the gps knows which way you are going. I had a Tab A and it was worthless. You had to drive down a trail for quite a ways before you could determine that you took a wrong turn.

I am another Tab A user. I know it is not a ton different but to me the bigger 10" screen is much easier to read/use without adding major bulk. I think most, if not all the Samsungs have built in GPS, but I know the Tab A does.

I also use mine to bluetooth music.

Thank all!!! Got the A7. I’m curious where you’ve mounted yours and with what. I already have a Ram ball mount on top of my dash over the speedo. That is where I had my IPhone mounted. I’m thinking about putting it there with a Tab-Tite mount. Let me know. Thanks…Mike

I do not mount mine. I keep in in a protective case. Stop and look at it when I need to. Typically I have a clue where I want to go or there is a "main" path. Even if not I can remember a few turns between looking and riding.

from what I can tell, no it will shut the screen down after X minutes.. I set mine to shut the screen down after 30 mins of non use.. i am usually looking at something on the screen under 30 mins though so.

i will say that I only use Lifetime Trailmaps and Avenza on mine to navigate though. I have Ride Command loaded on it but never use it since it's crowd sourced and if someone uploads an illegal trail it's no obvious to the casual user such as myself. When I am in unfamiliar territory I use the MVUM maps downloaded free from the NF website to Avenza.

I have been using a Samsung Tab A for a few years now. If you have a router for a computer at home just plug it in or use a wireless connection to find good program for mapping. I am using BackCounrty Navigator Pro. I have never used data prescription for it. I use the wireless to my router. There are several mapping programs you can download for a small price.
