Rebuild trans or replace with upgraded

Hey guys we have a 17 xp4 1k and had moved up to 32” tires so I’m looking to gear down my trans with a 12-13% kit. I know that the stock trans has multiple weak points in it so I’m looking for advice on weather it would be better to piece together a rebuild/upgrade on the stock trans or just sell the stock trans and buy a super atv trans with the gear reduction/double reverse chain/stronger case/ upgraded output and snorkel. We live in Arizona so we ride desert terrain in the winter and usually rock crawling and mountain/ elevation trails in the heat of the summer so the machine isn’t in one constant terrain. I just don’t want to end up broken down on the trail or having to pull the trans out multiple times to fix multiple parts. Anyone with the super atv trans? How well do they hold up? I have a discount code for super atv and figure it would total out to about 2k out of pocket after selling stock trans. Would the s-atv trans be a deal at that price or would it be worth it to try and piece by piece the stock trans? Thanks for any advice

If you’re going to stick with a 32” A/T type tire then I would keep your transmission, do the Ace 325 gear reduction, new bearings and a HD pinion retainer and call it a day. Don’t use reverse if you’re bound up and you shouldn’t have any reverse chain issues.

You should be able to find the Ace325 set for under $200 (check RMATV or PartShark), $250 or so for bearings and seals and about $50 for a retainer plate.

So the stock snorkel gear and output shafts should be ok? I know they’re a weak point but not sure what exactly causes them to snap. Is it just torque or fast snaps like what causes axle failures? If I can try to prevent any type of failure on the trail through throttle modulation then I’d be less inclined to buy a whole built transmission and just try to skate by with just the gears then

Disclaimer: I’m by no means an expert. From what I have gathered during my own research, most of the issues are caused from deflection from the pinion gear being driven upward and flexing the retaining plate. IMO, you can install a HD retainer(Rock Ready makes a nice one) and shim the snorkel and pinion shafts to eliminate any deflection. You can shim all the other shafts which is another story in itself, but at least doing the pinion and snorkel shafts will keep the gears from being able to move.

I'm currently doing this now. I snapped my reverse chain. So I decided while it's part it's time for some upgrades lol
  • SuperAtv heavy duty shift and reverse chain.
  • Sandcraft bearing and seal combo kit
  • high gear kit
  • SuperAtv Pinion Bearing Retainer
I heard those are some of the biggest failures I've seen. I heard about snorkel and shaft problems but heavy duty is another 1100 lol so I'm waiting on that.

Also SuperAtv carrier bearing since it's not much more work

What kind of situation caused your reverse chain breaking? With the added tire size we did and rock crawling we do I am fearful that the reverse chain would be my greatest chance of failure and I’d rather not have the chain grenade in the case and cause more damage to internals. Although the double chain seems rather expensive I feel it’s a necessary upgrade. Maybe it’s cheaper somewhere besides superatv? I know they tend to be on the higher side of price points but I haven’t really looked into seeing if there is other sellers of double rev chains
