New Rzr 570 Owner, what Mods would you consider must do's?

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and haven't even picked up my machine yet. That happens next Saturday and I'm counting the days. I have spent a lot of time on the forum getting some excellent information on my new ride. Thank you to all who contributed to the new owners sticky. Lots of good tips and things to look for when first taking possession of a Rzr. My question for you all is are there any must do mods to keep it running good and avoid having to take it in for repairs? My 2014 LE should come with the single air intake pipe (I hope) but should I go ahead and replace the filter box with an aluminum after market right away before even hitting the trails for the first time? Should I invest in a better prefilter right away too? After reading some of the posts it would seem that leaving the air intake system stock basically guarantees dusting the engine. Also is there any mods that really enhance the riding experience that you would recommend. I will be riding primarily on national forest trails in northern WI. Any advice is much appreciated.

Get SuperBrite LED tail light replacement bulbs. Now. Before your tail light lenses are melted into Salvador Dali artwork.

Every 50 miles you ride, put $20 into an envelope. That way, you'll have cash on hand to pay for new springs at 800 miles or so.

...Honestly, our 2012 has had not much else "really wrong" from the factory. There's lots of room for better, but, that's not the same as wrong, if you get my drift.

Overall, we've loved our 570!

All the best, James

Hi Bill, happy you found your way here so quickly. Pretty exciting getting a new toy. Enjoy it!!!

I'm recommending you send a PM to Steve5657 and ask him to exchange phone numbers, He has one of the finest 570 builds anywhere and he lives and rides WI. I haven't seen him much lately but with spring close maybe he's close to putting the sled away in favor of his RZR.

Your choice of vehicle will make you smile - a lot. It's easy to take of, extremely capable right out of box, and of course everything is upgradeable, at a wallet emptying cost. Take all the time you need, address the air system quickly(all of Polaris's SXS's have this issue). So the fixes come from about everything imaginable, to those giving up and buying an AC. A couple of less than $50 quickies are UNI pre-filters as explained in what you've already read. I think more and more of us realize we should have immediately snorkeled.(damn those mudders) and been done with it(for $75 parts). All the other XP systems cost is large($500) for an UMP or DFR or AirAid.

Anyway, call Steve, it'll be easier and more pleasant to deal with that way.

Tires...tires...tires ! These buggies come with crappy tires. A winch is a good idea as well. You need good tires because there is not going to be a tree around for you to hook your winch to sometimes, so don't think you can rely on just your winch. "I'm a New member" as well from B.C. Canada.."land to test your RZR" come one come all just tread lightly. Love RZR FORUM

Really take your time on the air filter change , there are lots of mixed reviews. I'm sticking with the factory job just making certain buckles don't come unsnapped, the seal is good and change paper filters regular. I don't live in a dusty place so it's not a great concern. Also communication device is nice if you ride in deep, crappy deal to walk 30 miles when a VHF radio would have allowed you to kick back, eat a sandwich and wait for help. I like the idea of an extra belt and spare tire too. cheers

Check the brake wire that runs across the top of the muffler. It sometimes is lose enough to lay on top of the muffler burning the plastic harness and even the brake wire. Just zip tie it up away from the muffler.

Windshield is a must

Top

Rear window and dust shield

LED tail/brake lights.

Rear View Mirror

Top

Tires

Winch

Doors

Brush Guards

Harnesses

Storage Box

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new ride.

Hello all... My 2014 LE should come with the single air intake pipe (I hope) but should I go ahead and replace the filter box with an aluminum after market right away before even hitting the trails for the first time? Should I invest in a better prefilter right away too? After reading some of the posts it would seem that leaving the air intake system stock basically guarantees dusting the engine...
Yes, you should have the one piece intake.

I did replace my air box with the CFM Performance air box, but you can save about $170 of you don't. If you decide not to, either add a shim or foam rubber under the lid of the air box to better the seal -- this is your most common failure of the air box -- a failure to seal. There's also Soapy's post filter mod, and someone on the board found an 'improvement' over that, which I cannot find, but it just requires the filter, no coupler, iirc.

As for a pre-filter, the SLP or Outerwears is good for keeping out water, rain and the really big dust particles. Some guys run foam oiled pre-filter material under the pre-filter screen. This will probably be the next thing I do.

GilaBrew is right, it's all about various degrees of dust collecting until you move the intake to clean air (snorkel). Being in WI, though you may not have problem to the degree that some of do in other parts of the country.

The first big money I spend will be to improve the ride. I don't pee blood after going out but sometimes it feels like I should be.

Okay, I just had to quote this because it's hilarious (and quite true, apparently).

Gentleman, thank you very much for all your advice. My list just got a lot longer. I knew that the purchase price was only the beginning when it comes to owning a rzr. I already bought my first mod. A cabelas hard top roof. Had some cabelas club dollars burning a hole in my credit card. Windshield and back shield will be next along with a better prefilter. Any recommendations on which windshield to get?

The op Bill asks for must haves, and he gets a bunch of desirables from some folks. Yes, make sure your intake is working properly but snorkels are not a "must have" unless you are in water , and the stock filter works fine if you have a good pre-filter (Outerwears are not a good pre-filter).
Harnesses are definetely must for safety sake.
Stock tires are fine unless you are in extremely rocky or muddy terrain, then of course upgrade.
A windshield is not a must, only a convenience.
A top is nice to have to keep the sun off you but not a "must"!
In my opinion, again for safety, a dash bar and a cage extender is a must along with an emergency kit, tire repair stuff, and tools.

Doors, light bars, bumpers, stereos, winches, sirens, switch panels, rear windshields, etc, etc, are cool stuff but not "must haves"

Safety first, cool things later!

1. Replace those rear light bulbs ASAP.
2. Get a winch (many like superwinch)
3. Get several recovery straps, tree savers, pulleys, etc
4. Get a shovel
5. Get a good gps and signaling device like SPOT or inreach
6. Get a good first kit and survival kit
7. Get a good portable battery jumper starter with air compressor.
8. Get a spare tire with jack
Not really mods, but must haves!

After a year with my RZR these are my must haves in order of must's!

read the owners manual from to back (its hard to do i know)
Winch with tow straps ect.
Uni filter
New spark plug
jumper cables
spare belt

Now the better half's must have's
Polaris glass windshield
Polaris full canvas cab
Heater

Don't get caught up in all the buy this or that before you ride stuff... Take it out for a couple of spins and see what you really need. Just go over the machine and check all fluid levels and important stuff even though the dealer said "it's ready to go".

I've only put a few hundred kms on my used 2012 so far, and I think a winch is a MUST. I've needed to get winched out of snow or mud on the majority of my rides so far. I also think a rearview mirror is s must so you can keep an eye on your riding companions.

Well, everyone else has pretty much nailed down the best stuff.

The winch, spare plug and belt, expanded tool kit. Tire repair kit, tow strap. Fire extinguisher, air horn. As far as extras, ride it, it'll tell you what you need (Lift kit, shocks, etc) Look at people's signature's and see what catches your fancy, then PM them to ask about it.

The one thing I haven't seen mentioned (tho not a mod or a "must have") is to join a local ATV/UTV club. The group can put together club rides to places you haven't been (but the ride leader has) and can keep you out of stuff you're not ready for yet. Also helpful to be with a group, as Murphy will get you when you're 30 miles into a 60 mile loop and 10 miles outside cell phone range!

Ok so I wasn't necessarily going to jump into buying A winch right away, but I can see how getting one makes a lot of sense. Any suggestions on winches that will not set me back a ton of money? What kind of pulling lbs would you guys recommend? I've seen some rzr winches on eBay going for the $150-200 range. Any thoughts on those?

Twice the weight of your vehicle, to start with. And the most waterproof you can find. With a rope, not a cable. And a kit to protect the tree you wrap it around.

You can find a primer on winches here Superwinch, LLC - Superwinch guide on how to winch and choose the right winch.

One of the white paper breaks down the math and physics involved with winches. However, the real secret is the rigging involved including using pulleys, straps, and anchor points. These machines are too heavy to manhandle, and with low clearance of a stock set up, it is only a matter of time until you get stuck.

They're ALL "must haves/must do's", just make a list by priority and $$.

If you've gotta save money on the winch, go Harbor Freight. Spray the metal cable down with WD-40 every time you wash the RZR. If you dunk the winch, take the end off to drain it. Most are not as waterproof as they claim. Re-lube as required.
