Lug Nut Torque

I have a 2013 900XP LE ...and according to the shop manual the rear lug nut torque is 30ft pounds + 90 degrees.....

Does everyone follow this or just tighten using a breaker bar?

The +90 degrees makes it hard to check the torque in the field ...why not just have a torque spec without the + 90 degrees?

After torquing to 30ft pounds:

1. 60 ft pounds @ ~ +35 degrees
2. 70 ft pounds @ ~ +45 degrees
3. 75 ft pounds @ ~ +60 degrees
4. 90 ft pounds @ ~ +90 degrees

I checked the wheels installed by the dealer ...they were at 85 Ft pounds.
When I try to go to 90 ft pounds it feels like the studs are stretching. I took the wheel off and it looks like the lug nut starts to make an impression into the aluminin rim causing an inaccurate torque reading. The stud threads look good and the lug nut threads look good. I was afraid I started to strip the threads.

Based upon these findings, I will not go over 75 ft pounds.....just doesn't feel right going to 90.

I torque my alum wheels to 90. Steel wheel are a different value. I totally understand what you're saying about feeling your getting to the breaking point. I have only broken one stud. I was in a hurry and wasn't easing up to the 90 lbs point. I'm sure I over shot and as the say, Haste makes waste. I think there is to much emphasizes put on torque. Put them on tight enough they don't come off and go for it.
