I went out for a ride yesterday and after a few mins of riding I started to have a lose of power, I thought it might be the clutch not working right, I was in lots of sand. Went to hardpack and same issue. I started to get backfire everythime I lifted off the gas. My display was also losing brightness, Like the back light was going out. I limped it back to the truck and came home. Did a compression check today 140 and 145 psi WOT. the 1 spark plug did not feel tight. I also found that the wires on positive terminal was loose and the air filter was full of dirt, plastic and sand. Is that compression ok, anything else you think i should check. The machine has 5400 miles on it. I kinda want to just buy a reman engine and drop it in. Also how do I know if the fuel pump is good?

Fuel pump pressure should be around 39-44. I think the newer 800 models ran a little higher but not much.

Compression is low. Not terrible but lower than spec. Should be above 150psi.

My 2008 800 backfired on deceleration due to a crack in the exhaust manifold. Didn’t cause a power loss but the backfires were somewhat impressive….especially after a long up hill climb followed by taking my foot off the gas for the downhill.

A clogged air filter definitely would cause a power loss. The 800 models were bad about pulling in dust into the air intake due to the location. The so called “grumpy mod” is the best thing to prefilter the incoming air. You have to clean the prefilter regularly (daily in a dusty environment) but it’ll drastically preserve the life of the expensive main filter. I also have a Outerwear filter cover on the main filter andit helps also keep dust out of the main filter. I just changed mine after over 1000 miles of riding and the filter could still be working fine…..I just like to replace it before it’s needed.

Ultimately I think you will need an engine rebuild.
