I'm one that can't afford one of those $2500 radio/stereo/intercom systems. But I do want an intercom system. I found a fairly inexpensive Bluetooth system on Amazon.

I found this Bluetooth intercom connects to your phone, can answer calls and play music from your phone. Cost is $87 for a pair.

Interesting. I have been looking at cardo bold with the headset. It is hard to swallow the $$.

What headset are you using? Are you using one of the mics that came with the Gearelec kit?

Did you just clip the Gearelec “box” to the headset or a more permanent mount?

I've also been looking into setups like this and currently I think this may be the best budget option available that some believe out performs the cardo:

These are available on amazon as well. I haven't personally tried them but the reviews are looking promising

Nice work on that setup, there's a few threads floating around with what others have done similar to this setup that may be of interest to you:

The riding in WI isnt very challenging so we usually do not ride with helmets (i don’t want to get in a helmet debate).

My concern is connecting them to muffs/headphones and will they be a cobbled mess.

Check the link I shared above to the other thread. Just like EricB the members are installing the units in muffs. No helmet required

If you don't want the bluetooth then these are a great option
I've tried them a couple times. Very clear, great range, and lightweight but
YIKES!!!
