Is the RZR a piece of crap?

I was thinking about purchasing a 2011 RZR S but the more I read on here the more scared I get. I'm afraid this thing is going to fall apart the first time I drive it. Am I reading too much into these RZR issues that I read on here? I want to purchase something to ride, not repair continuously.

you from the commander forum? everything mechanical can break at one time or another....do some people seem to get lemons? absolutely, but go read a ford, chrysler, gm or toyota forum and you will see many people who feel they have lemons....

if reliability is your top priority, get a rhino....if you want the sportiest s x s around, get a rzr.....

Good one.. I think you may be pleasantly surprized at how well these are made. Like Frank said. Keep it maintained and they run great. 1,000 miles with most with the turbo and no problems. Good luck on your search, hope to see you join us.

I'm not sure exactly what you have read but the 2011 S is a solid and reliable machine. Of course if you go with aftermarket items such as a turbo that produces huge horsepower gains reliability will suffer. However, it is the same story when you do that to a car, truck, motorcycle or w/e your toy of choice may be. That being said there are a lot of people that do run big horsepower kits and still have reliable machines. I would consider doing a bit more reading before making a final decision. Good luck.

Easy, stop reading this forum and go buy a RZR S.

After you realize you bought the best damn SxS out there, come back.

We'll leave a light on. :)

I don't think the RZR is a piece of crap, but I do believe people who purchase this "off road" machine and ride it like they stole it without doing what is required to maintain "any" off road machine and cry and complain on the forum that Polaris sucks...Now they might be considered a "piece of crap", but BLUF...The RZR is an awesome machine IMO!

our Gen 2 is working fine. I've only had to replace one front hub, but other than the i am happy. You would be hard pressed to get ANY UTV/ATV and not end up having some issues. And if you are already reading this forum you have the best source of info to face any issue that comes up. I can't put a value on what i have learned here and what i have saved by doing installs and repairs myself.

Here's the thing...there are a lot of regulars on this site who just love to talk about SxS's and share their experiences. However a lot of folks only post if they're having problems, or actually find this site looking for help with something, so you'll see more issues than you would in the general population. There have been several polls taken on this site regarding tranmission and other problems and the voting shows that generally the percentage of people with problems is very low. Find a couple of those and you'll see a better representation. My RZR 4 has about 600 miles on it and I haven't had a single problem. My buddy has a couple thousand miles on his RZR S and beats the crap out of that thing. He's had no problems either. My personal opinion...they're very reliable.

^ What he said. That's the nature of forums - people post more with questions/gripes than they do just to say that they've had their (whatever) for x years without a problem, or went on yet another ride with no problems.

I went through the same thing when I was looking at buying a KTM dirt bike. They used to have the reputation of being temperamental and requiring a lot of maintenance to keep them running. I got on the KTM forum and read all kinds of horror stories about various issues with them, but also gleaned from the long-time owners there that they were solid, reliable bikes. I bought one, and 8 years later I still have it - have never had one - not ONE - mechanical issue with it.

I'm new to RZRs, but not new to internet forums or off-road toys - I've owned plenty of them. As RZRCRZY said, you have to take the stories with a grain of salt sometimes. There are people who abuse the crap out of their machines, don't do required maintenance, then complain when it lets them down. Worse yet, you don't always get the whole story, so it can be hard to tell if the issue is legitimate or not....you get a guy complaining that he's broken 3 axles "just riding around" - but he doesn't disclose that he has a homemade 4" lift and his idea of "just riding around" includes 40' jumps and pounding miles of knee-deep whoops at top speed!

If you go read the Rhino/Teryx/Can-Am, etc. forums, you'll find owners of those machines complaining about problems/issues too. No machine is 100% problem-free and there will always be a few very vocal people who have had issues (either because a bad machine slipped through the cracks, or because they've abused it) and are going to let everybody know about it, every chance they get.

I just ordered a 2011 RZR after doing a ton of reading. I found that the majority of issues were on RZR's that had a bunch of mods or were buried in the mud or playing submarine, etc. I’ll be doing all that stuff and will expect some self inflicted breakdowns.

Get some arm guards, upgrade to harnesses, do the maintenance and have a ball on what should be a very reliable machine.

Sorry to see all the negative comments thrown your way.

In my opinion, RZR's are definitely not a "piece of crap" but are a tad on the finnicky side. As stated earlier, they are mechanical, and mechanical stuff breaks. Anytime you take something with that many moving parts, and subject it to the things we do, something's gonna give. Maintenance and preventive maintenance are two of your best friends, besides the friends with a winch and beer.

I've had mine almost a year now, and have not pampered it. I haven't abused it either. I've used it for what it is meant to do--have fun! I've had all kinds of toys, and still maintain quite a stable full. The RZR is hands down the funnest of them all! You can leave it stock, or you can doll it up--it really doesn't matter. But, it's kinda like a Harley--getting it is just the first step......

Just make sure to see your dentist regularly after you buy it--because you'll have all kinds of stuff stuck in your front teeth from the permagrin you'll have while riding.....and yes, that was a public service announcement....it helps make everything on the RZR tax deductible.....
