Hey guys, I'm looking to build an overhead console type stereo for my rzr. I wanted to get a look at a few that you guys have built yourself for some ideas. What did you use to mount it? Post 'em up!

I have done 2
The first was two pieces for my stock cage on my S

Then the second was for my new xp with custom cage.

After applying resin

After bondo and then primed

Ready to install

Finished
I welded tabs on the cage for it to bolt to
All of my electronics are mounted in the rood easily accessible by removing a few bolts to pull off the roof panel.

Took me awhile to do but turned out great.

Did you use any cloth, or just resin right over the wood? Wanting to do a similar set up in mine, and may do something like this for the rear? Looks unbelievable. Nice work!

Both times I did a rough framework with 1/2"x2" pine and then the plywood is pretty thin stuff. Like 1/8" or so. I tried to use as light of materials as possible. After I got my basic shape made I stapled old T-Shirts over the whole thing. I then put a couple really good coats of resin over that. I sanded down the high spots and just basically got rid of the big bumps and imperfections. I then coated the whole thing in a light coat of bondo and sanded that smooth . then a couple of really good heavy coats of primer surfacer. Sanded all smooth used poly putty to fix any flaws and then sanded that. Spot primed where needed and then sanded the whole thing . Sprayed sealer , color then clear. On the Black one for the stock cage I did some airbrushing in a blue pearl ,ghost flames and skulls . but on the new one I just used a tricoat white pearl with a coat of blue pearl and then clear.

I got the idea to use old tshirts from a thread on here so thought I'd give it a try. Works really well and is plenty strong . Its alot easier to do than it sounds just have to take your time and plan ahead. Biggest thing to remember is to allow room for the resin coating. build your plywood framework a little smaller than what you want your final project to be.

When I get time my next project is going to be a custom bed box.

The first one for the stock cage i built totally enclosed and ran bolts straight through up through the plastic roof . That worked fine. The second one Is open on top so I can easily access all the electronics inside. I have a fuseblock , 400W Pyle marine amp and JVC Bluetooth head Unit, All the switches etc. I made tabs with nuts welded to them to mount the roof so all I have to do to remove the roof is remove a few bolts and I can access any of my wireing. I used about a billion zip ties and alot of padded adel clamps on the wiring so everything should be good with all the bouncing around.

Bruce, you did a crazy job. I keep debating, but you just inspired me! I have an over head am and my 4 speakers I did in 6" caps. They sound unreal, just need to tidy it all up, so i think I will do the overhead thing like you and incorporate my caps, just so that parts already done and resin it all up. LEave it open on top like you cause my top comes off in a sec with the zues fasteners (spelling??) Im also looking for a better cleaner way to get all the wires up to the roof, and cant run it all through my cage. Was thinking of a big 1 or 2 inch pipe, or corrugated hose like off a shop vac, or a nice peice of braided hose and anodized clamps on ends like for auto engine dress up. Any thoughts on something else, or what you did?

If I were to build one similar to Magicmantx's split console for the 800 s where would I keep my ipod? I thought about mounting a small dry box to slide it in but I cant find any that I could flush mount in a hole. Otterbox and whatnot have the camlocks that cover the side...so it would have to stick out a few inches which I dont like.

just started my console the other day, I will keep posted as I progress.I posted pics in members area. Keep in mind that some measurements my be different on your utv if you use my design. This is on a 2012 800 rzr with the sport roof. Hopefully I can start cutting out the wood tomorrow.Any question I'll be more than happy to answer.

You dont pull it away it becomes part of the structure. Think of it like this. Your skeleton is pine strips about 1/2x 1 1/2and that is covered with thin plywood in the large areas .then when you stretch the Tshirt material over everything your making a cloth skin .The cloth skin will bridge the gaps and smooth out the shape creating slopes and round off areas to make it all kind of flow together. BUT it needs to be a hard tough surface. The Resin will soak through the tshirt material bonding it to the wood where it touches and will make it solid where it is stretched between areas with no wood touching it. Areas with no wood will require more resin to make it strong enough. If you were going to use this like a free form you would need to use fiberglass matt for strength. Thats why I use light weight materials like pine and very thin plywood. It just needs to be strong enough to hold everything together until it gets resin coated . Once its coated and hardens it joins all the weak pieces together makin it very strong ...And it doesnt weigh a ton. Thats why I dont use MDF because its too heavy.
