GPS unit for trail riding???

Hey all,
I'm unfamiliar with the trails I'll be riding on here soon as I'm just moving to the area. That got me thinking, I should get a GPS tracker for my rides so the wife and kids don't get lost in the woods.

What are some of the units you guys use and how simple/reliable are they? Are the usage fees or is it a one time purchase? I'd like to go with something that I can mount on each of the rides.

Do a search on android gps here. I love mine a screen big enough to see and complete for $175 ish
