Since 99% of this site likes the Skat/buff combo for duning and there is no thorough reviews of the Dune Stars on here, I thought I would add my review. I just got them today and Sunday will be my first time running them so I will give a full report then.

I went with 4 DS's for the following reasons

1. Way cheaper then any of the Skat/buff combos.
2. Skat's don't last 5 minutes if you hits rocks and there are A LOT of rocks in my local dunes.
3. I have always loved ITP Sand Stars on my other machines.

Here's my reason for wanting front paddles instead of stockers or buffs.

1. Higher flotation then stock skinny knobbies.
2. More steering effect
3. More "pull" when needed
4. And again, price.

I know everybody loves the Skat/buffs on here so please don't reply with things like how bad of a decision I made. This is just to help people interested in the Dune Stars. I'll report more Sunday.

Ok, screw everybody that says these tires suck. They kick a$$. They hook up like a paddle tire is supposed to. They don't feel so heavy like everybody has them made out to be. Ok so here is where a Skat Trak/smoothie "might" be a better setup.....

1. Flats
2. 2wd only
3. Smooth & straight

These tires went everywhere I wanted to go in 2wd. Then for the little super soft impossible hills with no run at all I kicked in 4wd and tore right up them. You can feel the fronts doing A LOT of pulling. I cannot imagine not having the paddles up front and not having the option of 4wd to help with climbing.

When in 2wd I noticed no rolling resistance with the front paddles. They turn great also. Durability is second to none. My local dunes suck cause they are full of rocks. At some points unfortunately I was "rock crawling" with them and at the end of the day there is not even a scuff on them.

Overall I give them an A+. Sorry other people have talked trash on them and I understand that everybody's wants and everybody's dunes are different so what worked for me maybe might not work for you.

Just some additional info.....RZR is stock except mods in signature line. Me and the wife weigh 335 pounds combined and I ran the tires at 5 psi.

I bought a 4 set of dunestars and loved them!! As a climber, I loved having the paddles up front as well!! I just couldn't make friends with not using the 4WD at Glamis.

I will make one change and run 8 paddle 12" rears next time and leave the dunestars on the front. As you can see from my video at the drags, Hoover in a stock(except clutch) smoked me in 2 WD in a RZR S with pipe, clutch efi controller and air breather. So the locals do have a good line of thinking. However, the red neck in me will never make friends with "smoothies", NEVER!!

Had a great time and recommend the Dunestars for any duner that ain't all straight line speed worried, cause there isn't alot of places for straight line speed anyway!! My front paddles saved my butt more than a smoothie could ever have....

wel stock is stock a rzr s with clutch pipe and controller is not stock.....lol but for all of you that never end up in the rocks scats get ripped up fast thats why i have both were i go at sand mtn nevada their are alot of spots that go from nice sand to rocks to sand and more rocks the dune stars hold up to this very well thats why i use 4 of them but if i know im staying away from the rocks i put scats on back but sand mtn is alot taller and steeper than glamis...and the sand ir real real soft so haulers and some sort of front tire work better but if you just stay out front scats and smothies work well what works at dumont, glamis, pismo wont work at sand mtn if i thought 4 dune stars worked the best i wouldnt have scats also.....

for glamis, smoothies and haulers work the best. i have 25x10x12 a;; around. smoothies in front and 8 paddle extremes on rear. i can make it up all the hills in 2 wheel drive, including china wall and olds. having front paddles are good but on hills they dig a rut for the rear wheels to go into. plain and simple, you dig yourself into a hole. i haven't been to dumont, sand mountain or anyother dunes besides glamis and gordons. but i i know works in the sand capitol of the world. :ride:

I'm wondering if a turbo'd rzr wouldn't do better with 4 paddles anyways? Obviously, there is twice the power to spin the tires? I'll be headed down to Sand Hollow and Coral Pink Sand dunes late april, and plan on purchasing paddles for the trip. Plus having a heavier duty paddle, would be ok for me at St. Anthony, occasionally we find ourselves in lava rocks. Don't know if I'll have the turbo on yet, but that should be installed in april or may at the latest.

how bad is the roost with the front paddles in the rzr. i know i have seen people that i ride with in rhinos get blasted when trying to turn and carve dunes so to speak. thats why i went with the mud lite shaved down to a mohawk. i feel it still gives you the pull in 4wd your looking for in the slower soft dunes/floatation of a smooth buff or close to it anyway and in the hardpack it gives you the ridge of original mud lite tread to run on to help with flats and fast wear. Just an option for those who are on the fence to think about. Glad you liked the dune stars royal thanks for posting a review the more information we get the better off we all are

Well first I run in 2wd I have just stock tires up front and dunestars in rear, I will either run a bighorn or the skats next year I ride at st. Anthony and Little Sahara in utah last time I ran with another RZR ( completely stock with aired down dirt tires ) the only difference between my dunestars and the aired down stockers was I just sat and dug holes. I'm sure there are a bunch of people on here who have gone from dunestars to skat's that could give us an honest opinion. As far as better in rocks go I wouldn't dare ride mine in rocks they have one season of pure sand and look like hell I can imagine what rocks would do to them...

Unless you have spacers or LT there is no problem with them throwing roost into the cab. They don't throw a tall roost anyway so I imagine even with LT or spacers it would not be that bad. I had zero problem with the fronts throwing sand but all I have for width addition is plus 1 (wheel offset) on each side.

Sand Hollow and Sand Mountain are two different places. S/H is in St. George Ut. and S/M is near Delta Ut. Where I was talking about S/H in St. George there are rocks everywhere. You even have to drive over solid rock for a few hundred feet to get out to the main dunes.

Id like to see a race between two stock machines... one with four DS's and the other with the Skat setup. Have my opinion on which one would win. Either up hill or on a flat. Oh the Skat setup would be in 2wd....
I guarantee Skat's would win on flats. Then they would win the first 1/4-1/2 of a hill until the front DS's started doing their job and then it would pull ahead. It's kinda simple logic.

Again these are just my opinions and until we see a flat out unbiased race we will never know. Until then everybody is just going to keep saying how crappy the DS's are cause they are a couple feet behind of the Skat's on flats.

at sand mtn nevada rzr's wont make it in 2 wheel drive even with scats many have tryed....ive come close but 50 ft short and after going over the back only a small hand full have ever made it up the back now i have seen turbos walk all over the place wile going about 20 mph faster than the rest and very very very few rhinos ever make it up

I have a video where I run down the drags at Glamis and am beat and basically tie in two runs.

Here's the setups:

Me - 2009 RZR S with a pie, efi tuner, k&n setup, stage 2 clutch.
Dune Stars on all 4 wheels.

Hoover - 2008 RZR Stock w Stage 2 clutch only
Skats on rear smoothies up front.

I was beat in 2 WD against the scats and held my own in 4WD on the second run.

Next run to Glamis, my setup will be:
Skat 8 Paddle rear w mohawked dunestars on the front.

The front paddle helped, I can assure you of that climbing, but if I could get my upgrades to hookup better (thus skattracks) I would've been unstopable I feel. Both on the hill and drag.

Just my .02 from a tricked RZR S that ate crow on a stock RZR.

I hear youJohnny,

I took my regular tires as well just in case as everyone says they work well. When my dumb *******, black gumbo clay, rock and mud driving butt got there I was amazed!! You couldn't have sent me photos and made me believe all the sand!! Hell even in the washes were I camped with a toy huler, the sand was several inches deep on the surface, glad my truck had four wheel drive!!

I never experienced the hard rattle from front paddles as the only time I drove on a hard surface was out of and into the trailer. I probably looked like a retard with my regular tires in the truck bed!LOL

Actually after 4 days, my tires still had the MFR titties on them. I could probably take them off, and send back as new and get my money back, if I........

hadn't painted them, told them how good they worked, and made all those videos that you all could nail me on when I lambasted the wicked dealer for treating me bad!!:rofl3::rofl3::rofl3::rofl3:

MJ, Ok, I've been to Sand Hollow twice and love it. I agree that the rocks and there and add a different flair to a great place. The first mile up is a hoot passing the narrows and all. The dunes in the back are mostly clean and steep, a lot of fun. did you climb the back mountain?
We have been to the top and road the ridge line to the back corner. Have you gone down the trails in the back? We ran out ot daylight last time up and are saving that for the next trip.

Yes I have covered every square inch of SH. I have been riding quads there and taking my rock crawler out there for the last 10 years or so. Long before there was a lake and a state park. No my RZR will not even come close to climbing the "back side" (steepest hill out there). I made it about half way. That was with no run and super soft chopped up sand. It made it more then twice as far up when in 4wd vs. 2wd. Whenever you want to come out and ride lemme know!!

I think alot of people underestimate how hard a rzr pulls in 4wd with smoothies as well. I am still hard pressed to believe all corners in 4wd with DS's will pull any harder than the Skat setup. I do understand you guys riding in some of the rocky area's using a molded paddle for puncture resistance, but the Skats do hold up well. Been to SM Utah and Sand Hollow many times with the quads and RZR with Skats. No flats yet. (Knocking on wood, LOL!)
