Hey guys. Im in the process of tearing down my top end for pistons and valve spring. Im trying to decide which way to drain the coolant while making the smallest mess possible. Anybody have a good suggestion?

just did it.
I say three steps:

step 1) front rad 1st. at that "Tee" ......about 1/2 comes out

step 2) at the water pump inlet from the rad. Now the engine empties....

one thing is for sure, have the right container to catch it. It doesn't fall down, rather sideways, then down.

step 3) tilt the machine forward or back to empty the aluminum tubes. They old about 1/4 of the volume. Don't anybody quote me on the exact percentage. You get the idea.

Thanks mark. All these years of rebuilding 450 top end on my motocrossers have spoiled me in to thinking every machine should have a single drain bolt at the water pump, remove it and all the coolant is gone. Your method sounds reasonable to me though, and ill wash the machine with the plastic off, so no big deal
