different width tires on same size rims?

Hey guys...great forum ya have here!
I just got the rzr 900 bug, so I purchased a 2012 xp, sat there looking at it and figured it needed bigger rubber, so I asked a local atv dealer to get me some mudders. All I asked is that the backs be 30x11x14 and the fronts be 30x9x14 (a little narrower in the front).

What they sent me were Gorilla's in the size's I requested. I am cool with that but...the rims are "all" the same size, HD2 rim at 14x7 4/156F/R.

I haven't installed the tires on the rims yet because it seems to me that putting a narrower tire on a wider rim will change the diameter of that tire, throwing off the front and back gear ratio's, thus wearing out the diff(s) prematurely.

The factory rzr rims and tires are narrower up front, which backs up my concern.

Has anybody had any experience with these Gorilla mud tires (part # MAVSTIG560524 and MAVSTIG560525) and rims (part # MAVSTI14HD203)?

Thanks...

If the rims are all 7" you are going to have to have same size all around.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Thats what I thought. I want narrower tires up front, so I will have to send the front rims back and get narrower ones to suit the tires. I should have just ordered the darn tires, rims and aftermarket axles from Gorilla directly and avoided this delay.

I doubt the change in height would effect you at all. Most all of the aftermarket wheels are the same width front to rear and we install narrower fronts and wider rears all the time. Maybe if you were using your RZR to drive on the street everyday, and kept it in 4wd, you might have some issues, but the 4wd system isn't really locked together anyways front to back.. so you will be fine running them like you have it. You can measure the overall diameters just to be safe, but i would imagine they are going to be very close.

Lipstick on a pig

I finally got the tires mounted on the proper rims. Don't let any salesman tell you it's normal to put different width tires on the same size rim...if you want different width front and back tires, you need different width rims.

I took the rzr down to the river to try a few hill climbs with the factory tires and the mud kicked my RZR's ass...I'm going back with these Mud-Chuckers and i'm gonna climb that biatch!

if you look in the background, you can see all the factory rubber I left in the driveway, tuning my turbo :ride:

True to an extent. If you dig around hard enough most tire mfg's will tell you a RANGE of rim sizes you can safely use with their tires. Not every change in tire width requires a rim change.
