Dan's Maps vs. Lifetime Trail Maps - Recommendation

I'm trying to decide on a GPS solution. I am in East TN, and have heard nothing but positive things about Dan's maps. However, I don't currently own a Garmin GPS. On Dan's facebook page, he mentioned that he is now selling printed copies of his maps on the lifetimetrailmaps.net website. I went to that site, and it looks like they also sell a quality set of maps that work on Android tablets. Does anyone have experience with both of these products that could tell me the pros and cons of each and make a recommendation?

Not to hijack the thread, but I've been wanting to make some high quality maps of windrock park. If that is an area that you guys are familiar with and are willing to work with me on it, please reach out to me. My contact info is all on http://rugedroutes.com. of course you can also PM me.

I won't be able to start on it right away but I'd like to at least get a better idea of what it's going to take to get that done.

Does anyone know if Lifetime Trail Maps has more coverage than Dans maps? I have Dans maps and like them a lot, but they aren’t updated very often. I also like the idea of having the bigger screen. I have came across some trails that are clearly marked a TWRA trail but It wasn’t loaded in my map from Dan. Thanks for any opinions/feedback!

I have used Dan's map on my Garmin Nuvi at all of the places mentioned in this thread and have had nothing but positive experience. I've heard LTM has more trails on their map for this area, so I'm going to give it a try. Can let you know mid Sept 19 when I go back and use the LTM setup. Bringing a saw to open some of the trails up as there were a lot of downed trees earlier this summer from all the rain.

There are way more trails between Brimstone and Windrock than what are on Dan's map. I haven't rode east of 75 TWRA though.

I recently contacted Lifetime about loading onto my Android tablet and received the following reply:

Our new app will be downloadable in late November.
I'm anxious to see what they will have to offer. A buddy bought the tablet from them for North Cumberland TWRA / Brimstone area, and it works great. Very nice to have the newer data, comments and POI's.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to buy a SM-T580 and buy the lifetime maps. I ride the TRWA, Brimstone, Black Mountain, and Hatfield McCoy systems every year, and it has maps for all of those. I've also ridden the Arapeen system in Utah, but I don't see doing that very often as its a long way from Indiana!

Just ordered the Lifetime Trail Maps however my existing samsung tab A 7" won't be able to run it since it's android 5.1 and it only has 8 GB of memory. I've decided to use my good tablet (Samsung 2017 Tab 3 9.7") with a waterproof case and one of the X grips listed in this thread;
I think this is the best option for me since I like to ride in a new state every year. This year I'll be heading to Eagle Rock Resort TN in Royal Blue territory.

I usually stay out of these discussions but for what it is worth Lifetime uses maps that other people tracked, color coded, edited, etc and have freely distributed. He uses my WV-HM and Outlaw, VA Spearhead, Taylor Park, Moab, Paiute, Arapeen, and Paunsaugunt and possibly others. I have now limited distribution of my tracks to close friends.

I have BobT's on my iPhone and the Lifetime set up on my tablet. I agree, Lifetime does use BobT's or other maps that are free. But the Lifetime trail map's have also done extensive mapping in the TN area, and Black Mountain KY that are not on other free sources. Or at least I couldn't find them when I bought the tablet last year. I have used BobT's maps in Utah, and Hatfield McCoy. In Utah, you really can't live with out some kind of a GPS. BobT's maps are great for the systems he has mapped. Thanks Bob for making them free to those who uses them.
