Had a pin hole in rear inner boot. Trying to replace just that boot. Videos i watched show a retainer ring in the cup. There isnt one there. Do i need to remove the outer side to get the boot off?

Taking apart a CV joint is no easy task and if you manage to get the clip off, make sure to keep the balls in the same sockets so you don't disturb the wear patterns to badly.

My advice, just replace the whole axle. I once tried to replace just the CV boot on my scrambler ATV, took me 10mins to remove the axle and cut off the old boot, 3hrs+ to reinstall the new boot after getting the axle out. Only saved me a grand total of $80 not replacing the whole axle which, conversely, would have gave me 2 new CV joints along with new CV boots, next time, will definitely just replace the whole axle.

that will have a spring clip on the outside. youll need a decent amount of force to press the star off the spline, which will pop off the spring clip from the end of the axle itself. make sure you dont lose it. cheap and dirty method would be open a vice on the bench wide enough to land on the star but not mar the splines, and slam it down to pop the axle out
better way would be to buy a new axle since the cost is marginal compared to the time and the mess.

Buy new axles. If you have to fix them, use a big hammer (2-4 lb) to pound the CV off. I put the shaft in a vice and then whack the CV (boot must be off). You will usually need a new circlip. It all makes such a mess and I don't like doing it. PM me for a discount code if you need new axles.
