Clutch problems

I rode almost 40 miles out into the desert Friday having a good time and made it back to town a little over a mile from home when it started clattering and making noise in the rear of my XP 4 1000 RZR. I stopped and got a ride to get my trailer to take it home and it wouldn't even climb the ramps. I get it home and pop off the belt cover and see a crack in the primary sheave. I thought that shouldn't leave me totally powerless but pulled it off anyway. Then I spun the secondary to see if the transmission was the problem. A tinkling inside the secondary got me wondering what that was. Got it off and took it apart to find both inner rollers broken with E clips and washers laying inside. Time for a complete clutch overhaul on this 5500 mile machine. Got on line and found out more bad news, Hunterworks was backordered on the primary.
I remembered I had some replacement rollers leftover from another clutch job I did. Do you think I can safely run a few more days with that cracked sheave on the primary while I wait on a backorder? I really don't want to put stock back in.

When I worked at auto repair shops and advised customers of recommended repairs, they would sometimes ask how long can they go before the part failed. I usually answered "Do you know when you're going to die?"

Your clutch may last a few more days or a few more minutes.

When you use the word "safely" were you thinking of personal or mechanical safety?

It's your machine. Your damaged part. Your decision. JMHO

If the spare rollers you have are aftermarket, like Hunterworks, for the outer secondary guides, don’t use them on the inside. They will fail. Hunterworks will tell you this as well. The OEM rollers for the inside is best option. I would suspect that the secondary has excessive wear and damage in the bushings, bearings, and helix, and possibly the “spider”, as Polaris calls it in their diagram. The 2019 shows use of the square pucks for the outer position. I would expect to see excessive wear in the guide slots on the fixed sheave. A new secondary clutch assembly may be needed. I’ve heard that owner of Premier Clutch out of Phoenix that refurbished clutches retired. Hopefully you can find a source that can refurbish if you go that route.

I wouldn’t be running a cracked primary any more than to get off a trail. Spins too fast to not worry about.
But in this post covid world I would not wait on a backorder either. I know Hunterworks seems the be the favorite clutch on this site, but it certainly isn’t the only good one. I assume you checked what the shops in Phoenix sell? Maybe they have something good in stock.

Thanks for the advice. I got ahold of a very helpful guy at Hunterworks and ordered their secondary, an OEM primary and a new Hunterworks belt and they got it shipped the same day. I should be throwing it back together Thursday, hopefully enough time for some belt break in and then wheel on Friday.
