Broken starter gear tooth missing

I had my motor start making a noise, so I shut it off and took it to the dealer. They determined it was a broken starter gear tooth, however they can't find the tooth. They drained the oil, hoping it might drain out, no luck. I asked them if they turned the motor over hoping maybe it would turn up, they are going to try that tomorrow. If that doesn't work I am going to go pick it up and pull the motor and save some shop hours. Rzr only has 650 miles on it, out of warranty though. Has anyone else encountered this, or have any ideas, that might save me pulling the motor ? Thanks in advance.

You could probably pull the starter, and then slide a small magnet (attached to a small-diameter semi-stiff wire) down the inside wall of the stator cavity. For reference, look at page #3-56 of the shop manual. About your only other option is to remove the stator-housing. Be careful about rotating the crankshaft with that broken gear-tooth floating around loose in there; if it wedges between the rotor and the stator, it could badly damage your stator ($$$$$). If it's already gotten jammed, you'll have to remove the stator-housing and the stator to get all the metal chips cleaned out of the area. Hope this helps.......
