Axle clicking noise

I have a 2010 S and the left rear axle makes a clicking sound all the time. I could understand if it was in a bind or under stress but I can roll on flat ground at 5mph and it clicks...it doesn't pop and then stop.....and also it does it faster when I speed up. Like every time it rotates it will click......any ideas for a fix?

The famous axle tick. When I had my 08 800 all of my stock axles ticked (when I had it in 2013) lol. This was shortly after getting into crawling and sometimes binding them up. Number one reason I've heard for the cause is when the boot gets a small tear and dirt or water gets in there and you lose the grease. I just bought all new axles and kept them as spares. Speaking of which I need to pick up some spares for my S.... Good luck! Axle tick always had me paranoid lol.

If you lightly apply the brakes, does it stop clicking? Brake pad rattle will do this and will drive you crazy. You can adjust the pads and it will stop. Frank (FJK) has a small video somewhere to show how to do it. I have had this problem and it was an easy fix. Mine was the brakes. Hope yours is this simple as well.

The outer brake shoe moving is most commonly the source of the noise.

Two solutions, one fairly long term and one permanent.

The first is to take a pair of scissors and a utility knife and cut into a pop can. Cut 8 strips 1/4" wide and about 1" long.

The outer brake pad is mounted on two pins from the caliper. At the top pin slip one of the strips between the top of the pin and the shoe and the back of the pin and the shoe. On the bottom pin, between the bottom of the pin and the shoe and the back of the pin and the shoe. You will find the movement of the shoe on the pins greatly decreased, and thus the noise stops.

Some Polaris machines have a spring over the pins and between the inner and outer brake shoes. You can get them from Polaris or at a hardware store carrying Hillman hardware. I'll try to post the PN info in a bit. Too cold and dark to walk down to the shop.

Ken,

I've also found out from another member that you can get Hillman springs and put over the pad pins, and between the pads...and that is the end of that!

The springs are Hillman Item # 540278, #93

Here is a pic of a rear brake without springs:

Here is a pic of the rear brake after the springs are installed, two springs per caliper:

A permanent solution. As I understand it Polaris uses springs on a Ranger model. But I don't know which or have a PN. But they are more expensive than these!!
