Anybody put together an overnight emergency kit?

While riding through the Jemez in the snow the other day (when my sway bar was rattling), I started to wonder what might happen if I broke down in the middle of nowhere. I didn't want to have it turn into a survivorman episode where I had to pull wires and gas out of the tank to start a fire. Made me think that for some of my outings it wouldn't hurt to have a small kit to get through the night if need be.

For nasty situations, I do have a SPOT Transmitter. But that is sort of a nuclear option. And what if I have to wait overnight?

I'm thinking the following :

Cheap two man tent / tarp
emergency blanket
small aluminum pot
sterno cartridge
Ramen noodles
Power bars
Water container
Fire starting (waterproof matches / magnesium starter)
Basic first aid kit
shovel
rope / parachute cord

Sounds like a good start. I'd add a good sized knife and/or a hatchet. I carry a sharp hatchet.

Things I wouldn't bother with: tent, pot, sterno cartridge, Ramen. I'd just throw some light beef jerky in there, along with the Power Bars. Poncho to keep you dry would be a lot easier to pack than a tent.

If you ride in the snow a lot, why not tie a small cheap set of snowshoes on side, just in case.

You have SPOT which is great. You can bet your a$$, if you are broken down in the snow 20 miles out in the bush, you will be hitting the spot button. You can send basic SMS from that device I believe. You would be giving your location to somebody real quick when she cut out.

Oh yeah, and a 1/5 of whiskey...

I carry similar items. I didn't realize just how much until I had to remove the Lock n Ride box last Saturday to begin some work on the RZR.

Whew, that was heavy! Now I know why my springs are sagging!

I think I'm going to go through it and lighten the load a bit if possible.

I suppose I don't need to bring the portable DirectTv dish, do I?

Hey, I hate missing football playoffs, what can I say? :rofl3:

I also carry a flare gun, smoke, a signal mirror and strobe. If I've got to punch 911 on my Spot I want them to be able to find me fast. Somewhere in my Ryfab may be a kitchen sink but I can't find it with all the other stuff.

Never had to use most of it for myself. Popped smoke at Dumont once at an accident scene with serious injuries and got my tail jumped on for having illegal fireworks???? Never try and figure out the BLM but they did get there fast.

a couple mres (I change them out from time to time)
