Here is the skinny. I have a 2014 RZR800XC with Walker Evans Shocks. From the Factory they come with .5 Inch preload on the front spring and 1.0 Inch on the rear. The max adjustment is an additional one inch. That came right from Cody at Walker Evans. Measure the distance between the top of the collar and the bottom of the red cap at the top of the shock. Max proload is 1.5 inch on the front and 2.0 inches on the rear. And That's the rest of the story.

If you have more space between the top shock collar and top of the spring would you have a stiffer ride? Forgive my shock ignorance.

Yes you will. On most standard shocks you can turn the base of the shock with a spanner wrench and it preloads the springs. Max adjustment on those style is around an inch. I have a knob adjustment on mine to control the damper to help offset the spring preload. One benefit of better shocks.
