4wd doesn't seem to engage right?

I've been having a little trouble with my 4wd engaging and thought I'd see if some of you guys could give me input on it. When I hit the switch I literally have to come to a complete stop before it will engage the front wheels and show the dash indicator on. I've tried getting rpm down low but not actually stopping but no use, just have to stop moving. That of course is annoying and it's going to end up getting me seriously stuck. When I bought the XP1000 that was one of the selling points that was described to me is that the 4wd engages more quickly than the XP900 did (which personally worked fine in my 900) and now it's definitely slower to engage since I have to stop. How are your machines? Same way or do I have a problem?

When the switch is on the 4x4 system will kick on faster then the 900.
Mine needs to be below 3000 or so rpms before the dash light will turn on.
Just because the dash light is on does not mean your in 4x4 it means if needed the 4x4 will turn on.

You have to be going low rpms and speed for the diff to engage. To prevent yourself from getting seriously stuck, put it in 4wd before you start going through whatever it is you are trying to make it through. Compared to my 800 a this 4wd works a lot better and engages more quickly. You can imagine why it is set up this way. Imagine people hitting the 4wd switch while stuck with the back tires spinning 20 mph..... POP!

I'm aware of that and not trying to engage it while I'm hauling butt it's just inconvenient to have to completely stop to get it to engage. I would never put anything into 4x4 while spinning. I don't like driving around with the switch in 4x4 really. I understand that it's not actually in 4wd till the rear wheels slip but any time you're turning or anything I can feel it pulling in the front end and it makes turns more of a pain to drive and more chance to break front axles. Mine is definitely not engaging at under 3000 rpm. Maybe under 2000. If I'm going through mud then I'll put it in 4x4 for sure but mud isn't something I encounter much. Rock crawling and hill climbs are more where I use 4x4 and I never just leave it in 4x4, just put it in when I can't get there in 2wd. I may not be explaining myself well but I just didn't think I should be having to come to a complete stop to engage 4wd. My 900 wasn't this way so I didn't expect the 1000 to be like this.

You should NOT have to come to a complete stop to turn the dash light on.
something must be off on your system, have it checked out.

Before I had the recall work done mine would engage at any speed. But now it has to be below 10 miles an hour. Both my buddies are having the same problem. Riding up a steep hill today I kept spinning out and couldn't figure out why until I noticed the indicator wasn't on. I made an appointment at the local Polaris dealer hopefully they can figure it out. The service guy said no one else has had that problem.

A common issue that I can't believe Polaris had not sent a bulletin out! When they do the recall during the reflash sometimes the 4wd indicator is inoperative. I brought mine home without checking and luckily I read this on the forum and sure enough mine had no indicator. Brought it right back for them to reflash it. I would not of been a happy camper riding all weekend without 4wd.

Mine does the same thing, it won't engage and the indicator will not come up until below 7 mph...but once it falls below that speed it locks up and works as it should.

I've got a 15 900s and I discovered this issue over the weekend. If I was going up a hill and thought 4wd would be needed I'd flip the dash switch. I didn't realize it wasn't engaging. So, the majority of everything I've done has been in 2wd.

This weekend I was going up a steep hill and another rider started to come down as I was 3/4 up. After they backed up I pulled out and felt like I had to use more skinny pedal then I should have.

Once I got to the top of the hill I noticed my digital gauge showed no 4wd. I didn't take notice if it was a need for a certain speed or rpm's but my 4wd doesn't engage unless I'm going quite slow when hitting the dash switch.

The front only kicks in if you get rear tire slip , I leave mine in all the time, unless you want to get sideways then I put in two for a squirrely ride
