How did you get the Z1 to 400hp? more pics?

 

Vipec, rods, pistons, head studs, heavy duty springs retainers and buckets, bigger turbo, bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump and a lot of tuning.

 

One of the main reasons I've held onto my XP4-900 (with Z1) is the wheelbase. I feel its kind of the "sweet spot", not short, not long. The newer 4-1000 chassis is just toooooo long, and the 2 seater just a hair short at high speed. I do wish I had a bit more suspension as I often have WAY more power than my suspension can handle. But then we do a lot of TIGHT desert, mountain, trail riding and long-arm suspension would kill me in those spots. There have been a few times I said to myself, "I would be screwed if I had long-arms in this spot"!

 

It's not really to bad, I still do all the same tight trails i use too with my stock arms here in michigan. I had 4x3 offset raceline wheels on my stock arms and it was almost 69"s wide, with my long travel i have 5.5x1.5 offset omf wheels that make it 72"s wide, the extra 1.5"s out either side has not affected me in the trails i run, you could even run walker evens wheels that are 5x1 offset to take off another 1". This setup has had a big impact in stability, suspension travel and handling, also the 5.5x1.5 wheels really make my scrub radius a lot better than the 4x3 wheels and the car handles extremely well.

Good luck with belts, transmission, and keeping over all reliable if you are realistic with your HP statement. I have found that much over 225-250HP eats belts FAST (and I've tried them all). Like one per day, easy. I assume you've done all the "trick" work to the trans?

 

The belt hasn't been and issue since i swap the dayco out for the Ultimax XS XS820 (pic below), that's assuming that your clutching is aligned correctly and set up right, if your not getting enough belt grip with your clutch setup and the belt is slipping nothing will hold up. As far as the trans goes it's taken a beating but i feel there pretty strong, i did take one out but just the output or snorkel tube shaft gear, I believe it was taken out because i run four paddles in the sand STU 1300 Plus on the rear and STU 1200 Desert Trak on the front, all comp cut full paddles running 38# of boost and launching it at 10#, having a shit load of fun.

 

Yeah, the Ultimate XS belt is what i've settled on as well. I should probably step up on my primary clutch. I'm just trying to avoid buying ANYTHING from STM again - over priced and horrible service. I've spent WAY too much money with them on my last go around and was never completely satisfied with performance.

I'm not saying a waste as I've done similar, but we both could have had a pretty bad ass rail or dual sport desert car for what we have in our glorified golf carts! Mendeola, Albins, etc. need to make a mid engine trans with a front PTO, AND wide ratio gear set. I've searched and searched and no off the shelf trans will work to make a SMALL / UTV SIZE legit mid engine (I4 or V6), 4x4 car.

 

I'm running the STM rage 8 primary and matching tunner secondary for clutching and ya it's not cheap.

 

I already have a crawler / buggy, you can't get them as small / light as a UTV, seat 2+ and / or have storage. Believe me I've tried. AND if you're building a legit crawler its $50k in PARTS alone not to mention the 400-500 hours of your time, minimum. I just spent $5k on new wheels / tires, and another $3k just to change out rear housing and new brakes to Spidertrax stuff.

I don't want another crawler, I want a four-wheel drive mini dual sport car - essentially a UTV sized but using legit offroad components. I do lots of desert, tight woods, and also hit the dunes from time to time. 4x4 is essential, not all the time, but I won't be caught without it. My idea is a 4x4 BFD Revo essentially. That would be an all out UTV EATER! I just can't find a trans that will work!

 

What about using a Honda car motor and transmission turned sideways with a spool in it, so what was once turning front wheels will turn a rear diff and front Diff?

 

Two local guys have built crawlers with this configuration. It works ok as a "crawler" because top speed is about 45mph on the rev limiter. The transaxle is a final drive in OEM application. In this configuration it goes through secondary gear reduction (the axles). Even with the tallest gears you can find in the axles (3.00 or so) it's really low geared.

 

As someone who is 6'6", I dream of extra leg room like you have. Considering buying a 4 seat model just so I can move the seat back for extra room. I don't have the ability to do a stretch myself so I'm guessing the cost would be a bit much.

how did you get plates? I thought Michigan SOS stopped allowing street plates using the assembled vehicle title.
