Timing Chain, replace the tensioner

 

I thought it sounded like cam chain as well,but I’ve already got a trp tensioner. Is there a chance they got bad or my cam chain is stretched?

 

That is 100% the timing chain, not a doubt about it, the sound is too distinctive to be anything else and I knew it within the first sec of your video and your in the correct location of the engine too.

I have the TRP tensioner as well, it needs to be re-adjust every few hundred miles, while the engine is warm and running. Did this sound start just after installing, or adjusting, etc? hand tighten it all the way, does the sound go away?

 

It just started recently. I’ve tried tightening it up more and just don’t seem like the sound is going away. I did like the instructions said hand tighten and then back off 1 and 1/4 turns don’t seems to make a difference if I back it off or leave it in all the way though.

 

Reset your marks on the crank and pull the tensioner out, make sure its not broke, if turning the knob isnt making a difference this is likely the issue. If the tensioner looks good, put it back in and I would pull the valve cover and turn the crank by hand to check the chain.

Chain might be stretched too if its has been running loose for awhile. Recently had this exact same problem on my 2017 XP1K and had to have the chain replaced

 

That’s kinda what I’m thinking. I’m gonna tear into it this weekend and see what I got.

 

Why did you put on a manual tensioner?
2017 should have had an auto chain tensioner unless you had an early production model then it had the hydraulic chain tensioner.
Install an auto tensioner and never adjust it again

 

Auto tensioners can and do fail regularly, when they do it happens while youre out riding you are pretty much screwed until you replace it. Also a failure can result in a lot of damage. A manual tensioner in theory shouldnt fail, or atleast the likelihood of it happening is right there with: this would be the first time I ever heard of it happening. Its more so for peace of mind, there is no performance benefit to it and in the end is actually more work.

 

Fail regularly?
Never heard of an auto tensioner failing. I've installed on 2 of my rides and never a problem.
I'll take my chances vs messing with a manual tensioner.

 

I might be confused. When I say auto, I mean the OEM tensioner. Are you referring to an afetrmarket auto tensioner, like the Tusk, that replaces the hydraulic OEM, I've never heard of those failing either. The OEMs however do regularly fail.

 

I can't say I trust the auto-tensioners either. My original one failed (granted it was 7 years and ~2k miles), had it replaced at the dealer bc I was in a pinch needed it fixed before a trip, failed again on that very next ride, and was replaced again. Have about 200 miles on this one and it seems fine for now. May have been an issue with how it was installed though, who knows.

 

The good thing with the older model is I kept the hydraulic tensioner in the rzr in case the new style tensioner fails.
You can't do that on the later models with the mounting on the cylinder jug being different.

My guess is you tightened the tensioner too much and wore out the chain guides.

No luck yet. Tried adjusting it and had the same results. I order a new cam chain thinking my chain is stretched also,but didn’t have a fly wheel puller it’s supposed to be in today so hopefully by this weekend I’ll get I changed out and have the results I’m looking for.

 

Can't believe a manual tensioner wouldn't take up the slack.
Worn chain that much probably means gears too.
How many miles on it?
I would throw on original tensioner and see if same results

 

Yeah quite weird, I went a head got new gears too just in case so hopefully I don’t have to worry about it. Has about 4400 miles on it. I just got it about a month ago upgraded from a rzr 800 it was a lot easier to work on. When I got it the intake valves had zero lash on them so it was making some noise, I adjusted them and still heard some noise and was thinking chain after that. Maybe the zero lash had something to do with it?

 

If all the intake valves had zero lash you might have a dusted motor.
Valves get tighter as they wear out so you wouldn't hear any noise and that's why you ended up with zero lash.
The other sign of zero lash is hard starting when cold then warms up and it runs fine.

 

Did you have tensioner #3 or #12?
My 2017 had #12 since it was early production

Does it have original air filter system with a blue donaldson filter in it?

 

Mine is #3. I did a compression test and had 175 in both cylinders. It does have the original air filter system definitely not a blue air filter though it’s white.

 

Throw away the white one.
Get the oem blue one.

Rebuilding motor right now. Ended up having a bad connector rod bearing and the oil pump chain was stretch pretty badly also.
