170 nightmare

I purchased a 170 in April 2012 for my son...the dealership had a hard time starting it when i picked it up (should have ran away then), it has been back to the dealership 3 times since i bought it, all starting issues & so far all have been fuel related, including a new fuel pump.
Now its dead again and seems like it is not getting gas, even when it has been "fixed" it is a chore to get it started, had to play with the choke & gas pedal to keep it running until it was warmed up even in summer, but when it was even just a tad chilly it was a real PITA.
So now i have a $4500 boat anchor basically, this has to be the biggest POS that i have ever bought.

Sorry for the rant & especially in my 1st post, but i am ready to shoot it with my 50 cal and put it out of its & mine misery

they are a pain to start. I read on one of these posts about changing the jetting on the carb that makes it start and run better....(I have no idea, just repeating anothers comment).

I will say the kids in our group love to drive them......after the parents start them.....we have 5 170's in the group.

@hog they are electric start, if i had to pull start this POS i would have already blew it up :)
@hokie I have seen that post about changing the jets also, in my recent readings...

I really like the efi setup & may go that route cause i may be wrong be i dont think our crappy fuel will effect an efi like it does a carb

Sorry about your troubles with te 170. I bought my daughter a 2011 rzr 170 last year. It was terribly hard to start even in 70 degree weather. I changed the jets and adjusted the throttle cable behind the firewall. The little thing will start in 20 degree temperature now sometimes without even choking it. It also runs quicker and smoother. My daughter is 8 and starts hers by herself, even on cold mornings.
Before, I would have to play with it for 5 minutes sometimes to get it running and them as soon as it started I would take off and ride around the yard to warm it up. Now she fired it up and it will sit there and idle all day. By the way, I changed the pilot to a 40 and the main to a 110

I may have to try re-jetting it, something has to be done...re-jet, efi kit or set it up on my shooting range & blow the snot out of it ( which i dont want to do,as my son loves it when its running ) but at this point i think he may take pleasure in poking a few holes in it also...lol

Bumping up the pilot jet to a 40 will solve your problems.
These lil guys are jetted REALLY lean from the factory to meet EPA emission requirements so they can be imported into the US.
Polaris seems to be oblivious to this problem and they will offer little help on the issue.
I have personally done an EFI conversion on a Pitster and love it, although it was a bit expensive but worth it to never have to touch a carb again.
Contact Smartdave here on this board if interested in the EFI conversion, as he is putting together a kit for sale.

We had the same issue on cold starts just like most others from the get go.. In our case finding out that the valves weren't set correctly. .003 intake-005exhaust. Made a huge difference. One click and it starts. The valves were so tight they never really were all the way closed. Cold and no compression doesn't work well.

Ok you all have talked me into putting a little more cash into this thing. So far i have decided to get the Big Gun Evo exhaust kit & am going to rejet the carb to 40 & 110. Also i seen the diy cvt snorkle & might do that also as its cheap & easy.
What other mods are recommended for performance & relialabilty (mainly relialibly..lol)
Also i am in Texas so will the 40 & 110 jets be good for here, not sure of the elevation but we are not real far above sea-level couple hundred ft maybe.

I use Sea Foam in my gas can's and tanks on all my machines, it stops the gas from turning into varnish in the carb's when it sets for awhile. Our fuel is poor grade and goes bad in short order, Just my two cents.

while waiting on the new jets to arrive i noticed the fuel pump appears to be dead. This is the 2nd one now in less then a year....
Is there an aftermarket replacement for it as i dont seem to have any luck with the polaris OEM one or if not where is a cheap place to buy an OEM one as this is getting pricey buying an $80+ dollar one every few months

The switch was on & it did have gas. I stuck a stick in it & it has maybe 1/4" of gas in the tank, BUT i just filled it up & it started pumping. Guess it dont pick up the last 1/4" & i even tried it on reserve and it still didnt pick it up.
But another issue fixed, thanks man you been a great help.

Ok...one more question. I ordered some jets & I didnt order the right ones cause the ones i received are way smaller(in size both length & diameter). I ordered jets for a 22mm carb (got that out of the owners manual). Since there is no return on jets i am back to step 1 again, before i order another wrong set can someone please tell me what to order.
