'09 RZR 170 Backfiring on Decel - Fixed by Airbox?

The RZR 170 I bought for the kids backfires quite a bit on deceleration. I have adjusted the Idle screw to where it should be, and adjusted the air screw 2 1/4 turns out from closed. It still backfires however.

Luckily we don't have the blue smoke issues that everyone else had, or any of the tell-tale signs of motor problems that many of the '09 owners had. It fires up and runs really well, and stays running. But it sounds like the backfiring has been fairly common.

It has not had the airbox recall done yet (it's going in Thursday, and will not be ridden again until it's been done.) The carb has been cleaned, and the air filter has been thoroughly cleaned and oiled.

I have searched all over the forums, and have read a lot about the 170's having issues with backfiring, but most don't seem to suggest what they did to solve the issue if anything. I'm wondering if the new airbox has fixed that problem for most people. I had considered going up a size on the jets to richen it up a little and avoid the backfiring, but it still has the stock jets, and everyone seems to suggest that their 170's run best with the stock jets and updated airbox.

Any suggestions or advice?

Mine does that to. I have the '09 with the intake recall done. I thought since it wasnt smoking or anything it was ok. I even adjusted the valves last weekend and it still does it. but as long as it isnt affecting performance, im not really worryed a bout it. May be its cuz it has a carb.....idk. to me fuel injection is simpler. may be it will stop with that dial-a-jet on it.

I have a 2010 mini 170 for my son. Stock it backfired and thats even with the updated airbox, after a C&D engine performance package where it replaces the original filter with a UNI and ......... it backfires, although not as loud or frequently. Another buddy of mine has an 09 with updated airbox, cant remember how much fiddling he has done, but as suggested, just gave up trying to solve it and enjoys it. Anyone have a aftermarket airkit and/or exhaust and how do they find backfiring if any?

As a GENERAL rule if it backfires, it's LEAN.

You want to diagnose the problem correctly BEFORE making changes.

SIMPLY apply partial choke and run it see if the situation improves or worsens, and let that guide your decision.

Hope this helps

Bigdoggy, yes it did help it a lots but very little backfire now. To be honest with, I don't like the Big Gun exhaust however it did help the performance than a stock 170. It's to loud and neighbors want to kill me when my son cranks it up. If you have a CArb that is not manual choke but you can choke it with a cable on your dash, Vent Racing can get you the right jets for your stock Carburetor or a local Polaris dealer can get the jets. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask or someone on here can help you....Thanks, Steve
