Skid-Max UHMW Support

Racers, rock crawlers, and fast trail & desert riders have known for many years about the RZR frame and crossmember damage which occurs when using unsupported UHMW skid plates. Racers and serious rock crawlers have been welding steel panels into the frame below the engine & transmission to provide additional protection that their UHMW skid plates alone cannot provide. However, until now there has not been a strong and easily installed solution for regular owners of the RZR XP1000, RZR XP Turbo or RS-1.

The Thunderhawk Skid-Max changes that. Now you can install the protection you need in about an hour (no welding required). The Skid-Max is installed between the frame and skid plate (above your UHMW skid plate), so there is nothing to hang-down or drag when you are sliding over trail obstacles. Your UHMW skid plates will still give you the smooth, "slippery" bottom surface and the durablity to resist abrasion and surface damage when sliding over trail debris and rocks.

If we were lucky, a simple flat plate would do the job (but it's never that simple). The Thunderhawk Skid-Max is formed to fit properly with the angles of the RZR's steel engine crossmember and is also formed to clear the transmission & the frame's sheet metal stamping (at the rear, below the gear case) while mounting solidly to the main frame tubes (not relying solely on the factory skid plate mounting bolts). The Thunderhawk Skid-Max is designed with these features as it is the only way to protect these items which are extended below the frame tubes.

You buy a new RZR or RS-1, then you “invest” in UHMW skid plates for extra protection. Having UHMW skid plates that look “like new” from under the RZR, with a bent and damaged frame above is no deal. Why do half the job? With the Thunderhawk Skid-Max Rear Engine-Guard Skid Plate Reinforcement Kit, you'll now have the strength and peace-of-mind knowing that your UHMW skid plate will not flex causing expensive frame or engine damage. Installation takes less than an hour. Every RZR with UHMW skid plates should have a Thunderhawk Skid-Max!

For more details and photos, check out the Thunderhawk Skid-Max on our website.

Please note: The photos showing the Skid-Max Rear Engine-Guard panel installed on the frame were taken to illustrate the mounting location on the vehicle with the skid plate removed. This part is not visible when the UHMW skid plate is installed.

Re: Skid-Max UHMW Support

Nice piece. Even running a 1/2” Trail Armor skid I have still bent the factory steel plate underneath the transmission. They are definitely still susceptible to bending.

Re: Skid-Max UHMW Support

Yep, we bent ours as well. The UHMW material is very durable (resists gouging), but is also very flexible. This flexibility is the Achilles heel of UHMW. Whenever your RZR chassis and UHMW skid plate impact the ground, the UHMW plastic simply flexes upward with the full impact transferred to your RZR’s frame crossmembers. Immediately after the impact, the UHMW flexes back to it's natural (flat) shape, leaving the frame bent or other items damaged above the point of impact. It is actually rather common for RZR owners to find the steel crossmembers on their frame bent upward from these impacts after removing a UHMW skid plate (regardless of brand). Before installing the first Skid-Max prototype on our RZR, we had to pull this stamped frame piece down since it was bent upward and basically touching our transmission case.

The Skid-Max provides clearance (safety gap) between the top of the Skid-Max plate and the stamped plate below the transmission, as well as the transmission case itself. The rear tabs (that go to the frame tubes) are the key to this Skid-Max design. Although not shown in some photos, these tabs are bolted to the frame at four places. This reduces flex across the span and transfers the impact to this stronger area of the frame while eliminating UHMW flex.

Thanks,
Harry
