Hey Guys and Gals,

I'm taking the family for their first trip ever to the Dunes. I've been going for several years on both quads and dirtbikes but the wife and kids (9 and 6) have never been.

I wanted to stay at the hotels in Yuma as we will be riding with a group out of Olgilby and I wanted to be able to get them out of the sand (pool, bed with no sand, resturaunts, etc.) during the downtime....babysteps, 'ya know.

My RZR4 will be on an open trailer. :scared2:

Has anyone ever heard of stuff getting stolen from Yuma while staying there in like in my situation??

The alternative, which I'm trying to avoid, is to transport everything to the camp in Olgilby where my friends can watch it.

What'cha think??

Might be better off leaving it with the group thats camping at Ogilby chained to the trailer with the trailer chained to something else...lol... but the truth is no matter where it is if they want it bad enough they will more than likely get it. Thats why the good lord made insurance agents and .357's!

I think Yuma is the car theft capitol of the US. I was there on biz for communications work at MCAS and when I left my hotel my car and all my tools, clothes were gone. Just a pile of glass. Cops said the average resident has 2 cars stolen. There so many cars stolen there they put plate readers at the boarder check that sound an alarm every time a car goes through with stolen plates. The boarder guards couldn't keep up as it backed up too bad so they turned the audible signal off.

I was trying to spare myself the hour+ round trip and gather some reassurance from you guys but I guess that's just not going to happen.

I'll be dropping at camp I guess.

Thanks everyone,
See you out there.....

Holy Crap. Is this place located in "da hood"? I'm so thankful the areas I ride don't have jackarses like that we have to worry about. As a matter of fact, when I'm riding property that I can legally carry my weapon on, I don't even lock the Jeep up. That's a shame that you have to go through such a PIA to enjoy yourself. Good Luck.

Not necessarily "da hood" but Mexico is only a stone's throw away. Anything that gets stolen can be across the Border inside of 20 minutes and then they will wave to you as they drive by on the Southside.

Also, it's not necessarily about losing the whole RZR4 either. I don't need someone "helping themselves" to my hard earned accessories, Easy-up, tools, coolers, and whatever else I can't fit into the truck and is out in the open.

Yeah I hear you. That's pretty close to that third world country below us. Sorry to hear that stuff like that has to be worried about. I don't blame you for being concerned. Sounds like you have to be cautious with the family as well as your belongings in that place.
You could always try jerry rigging an auto battery and cow fence wire to your stuff and see what kind of deterrent that turns out to be. You see a bunch of folks running around with burnt hands and you'll know it worked well.

I have been going to Ogliby for years and never had a problem with my stuff there,I have friends who stay in Yuma but leave their machines at camp with us all the time. I wouldn't dream of leaving my RZR on a trailer in a motel parking lot.

I have been staying in hotels in Yuma for several years as part of my military travels. I've never had my vehicle broken into or anything stolen from the room. I've seen people park everything from classic cars to trailers with construction equipment, etc on it no problem. If you stay at the bigger motels located by the mall, which is right off of the 8, it is very well lit up. That's not to say that it can't or hasn't happened but with all the snow birds and others who routinely bring vehicles and recreational vehicles down, I don't think it's an epidemic. However, I think it would be easier to leave your RZR and trailer with others at the dunes and just drive the car back into Yuma as needed without the hassle of hauling and parking with a trailer.

there is a new casino the Q, off the interstate and only 5 min. from olgilby. I know they have security/ and cameras in parking lots. plus it cuts down on trip time to the dunes.
when u coming down to dune?

We are heading out Friday night after the kids get out of school. It's a 5 hour drive so somewhere around 9p we'll be there. I'll probably drop the family at the hotel and head into Olgilby to the camp and drop off the trailer and gear.

My tonneau cover imploded in the high winds earlier this year so I can't even cover the stuff in the bed of the truck.

I'm certainly not looking forward to the hour drive round trip to Olgilby and back just to drop crap off. Then on Monday morning it will be the same crap. I'll have to go to Camp to pick everything up then head home.....sheeeeesh...

I don't have a toyhauler anymore and a buddy was going to let me borrow his but like I said, I wanted the Fam to be able to get out of the Dunes and back to civilization. Next time we're staying in the sand, this is crap, but it's better than getting stuff stolen or staying up all night worrying about it....

Are you coming out Dan??

Well Dave look at it this way, the extra miles to drive back an forth are minuscule in comparison that a lifetime of a great family activity could potentially bring. If they like it then you will get green lighted for another toy hauler and will be able to spend counltess hours in camp or duning compared to the two that you will spend driving back and forth this weekend. Just load the family up at the hotel and take a sunday morning ride outta Ogilby and then head home from there! Have fun!

Why not just rent a toy hauler for about 120 a day and save yourself a crap load of aggrevation? Your cost in the end will likely be the same.

I have stayed at the Quechan casino many many times. I have had rails and rzrs on open trailers and have never had a problem. They have a vallet area if you are worried. If you call for room tell them you are a q member and it is cheaper. I think it is 79 and 99 for weekends. Get a q card when you get there. Nice rooms, pool, cheap buffet with your card. Its the closest hotel to the dunes.

Mainly because it's the family's first time out, I wanted to get them OUT of the Dunes and get them somewhere more familiar, like a hotel. Next time, we will have a toyhauler.

I have full coverage insurance. It's cheap and senseless not to have it, but it doesn't reimburse your ruined weekend. "Things" I can replace without issue, quality time with my children, I cannot.

Thanks for this but I heard about it a little too late, sort of. We have points at one of the other hotels and will be staying there. The one we are staying at has a breakfast buffet too. I just don't know what the parking arrangement is.

No worries, It's just one trip of many I hope to make this year and the only one that I should have to worry about dropping off the stuff at camp.

I'm just looking forward to getting out there. :ride:
