so I was at the rzr forum ride this weekend and had a very strange thing happen...started the xp and drove a few hundred yards, something sounded strange so I shut it off(well I tried to shut it off)..turned off the key but the starter was still turning the motor over, turned the key on and it started back up I did this 4 times then it shut off...now the starter doesn't work...so my question is has anyone ever had this happen if so what did you find was the problem? the switch, the starter or something else

If the starter continued to run with the key off thats most likely a starter solenoid problem( solenoid stuck closed)..not the starter...although it continuing to run could have killed the starter.
The starter solenoid is remote, its near the battery..and yours wouldnt be the first to fail on an XP.

Starter is fried... I know of (2) of them that did this... (1) I towed in from the hill at Glamis...

The starter itself can not cause itself to continue running with the key off..it has to be getting voltage..the voltage is supplied by the starter solenoid..so either the solenoid is sticking closed or a short or bad ignition switch is supplying trigger voltage to the solenoid...most likely is solenoid sticking closed..heat can weld the contacts together..semi common problem on the XP. But yes...starter failures are also fairly common...usually the first sign of starter failure is it wont turn over...you hear the solenoid clicking like the battery is weak..if its a bad starter and you continue to try to turn it over that can cause the solenoid to stick closed..heat builds and the contacts get welded together...you can also melt the starter cables.. So he likely has a bad solenoid but may also have a bad starter as well.

Thanks for the reply everyone...took the starter off today, and yes it is fried:( the only thing I don't know is what caused it,the switch or the solenoid so I'm going to replace them both...also going to install a battery cut off switch so if it ever happens again I can just kill the power an save the starter

The starter could have fried the solenoid..or the solenoid could have fried the starter. If you didnt notice any issues before the time the starter wouldnt turn off..probably the solenoid sticking and keeping the starter engaged killed it..if you had issues before like the starter seemed to turn slow or your got just a click when trying to start ect..the starter load killed the solenoid.
I doubt it was the igniton switch...but it can be tested if you dont want to just throw away your money on a new one.

I think people may be cranking these over too long. I always just bump my key and it starts real easy and fast. I was at the KOA ride and heard a lot of XP900 getting turned over to long and then you hear it free spin for 3-5 seconds after being on. Just a thought.

The xp starter is easy to pull just don't go by the manual (it's to hard to get to the bolts the way it says to do it) just pull off the air filter housing then it will be very easy to get to the 2 little bolts that hold the starter on
