Windshield or no windshield, that is the question!

So I ride with several RZR's and some guys prefer to run a full windshield and others run a half shield, and others prefer no windshield at all. Certain riding conditions in places like Hatfield McCoy can really dirty up a windshield in a hurry and if your riding with a group you can't always stop right away and wash it off. I live in Ohio and do some winter riding so I'm thinking a windshield in front and back may be a nice thing to have but I wonder about it fogging up, I don't really plan to spend money on a full cab enclosure so I'm wondering if the windshields are even worth it? I have ridden all summer long without windshields and I kinda like the cab being open.

Would you guys say you prefer with or without windshields and please explain why?

Thanks in advance!

Jesse, I am new to the sxs thing, but I don't want the hassle of cleaning it. I rode behind a teryx and a rzr on a gravel road in the rain and it was much easier for me to wipe my goggles whereas they had to stop and clean their windshields. I like the openness anyway, even having the top on it this time seemed strange to me.
The half windshield may be useful, I don't know how much wind they deflect.

With any windshield you need a rear windshield. Just so you know. The half windshield does a pretty good job of deflecting wind over your head when you are stepping in the pedal. Otherwise when going slower, the breeze hits you. I like that feeling.

In the summer I go with a half and in the winter I use a full.

Zip, zero, nada!! The windshield causes a low pressure area behind it that sucks the dirt and dust in. It actually can make it dustier. Besides goggles or a face shield is easier to clean. Plexi scratches easily and driving into the sun looking through scratched Plexi is miserable.

I'd rather be riding in the desert than using Tapatalk!!

I use full windshield all the time until the dust just gets too much..I rode this past weekend and had to take it off because the dust was so bad...Good thing we had helmets and goggles on because I wouldnt have been able to ride with all the dust...

The full windshield does create a sort of whirlwind of dust inside the cab if you dont have a back glass though..

Another option is to have the shields of your choice with the axia alloy quick release mounts. This way you're setup for different types of riding and when you're hitting the H&M trails with a large group, just pull off your shield and goggle it. Either wy, you're gonna get the Rzr dirty.

Everyone I know that runs a windshield also runs a back shield or at least soft plastic rear window to cut the dust from swirling in on them from behind. I dunno I'm kinda leaning toward a half shield in front and a cargo net or something in the back if I do anything. So far I'm not convinced that I need anything other than open air but options are always good, maybe a quick detach deal for winter only, I dunno....

Keep the thoughts coming, I'm loving the feedback so far!

I run a full windshield also made of auto glass. I wouldnt have it any other way. Mine is designed with an adjustable flap on the bottom that can allow for air flow or not. Its amazing how much air it will let through with the small opening. Ya, I get a little dust in the cab. If I was worried about eating dirt, I would have bought a boat. I get more dust through the holes in the floor pan then I do over the back. I do run a headache net on the rear.

I have a Koplin 2 piece winshield and a rear EMP window and roof. I've tried different ways of running them but the best is running all at once. I've taken off the top half and ran the bottom half for one ride. It poured rain and me and my passenger got soaked even with a roof, full doors and rear window. It will get dirty and fogged sometimes but it's worth the effort of keeping it clean enough to see. I use a small cheap squiggie to wipe off the window when needed. I run with quads a lot and I have my riding buddies wipe the window for me since I'm running a harness and doors (takes too long for me to unhook, wipe and rehook). Besides I carry all their chit with me in the RZR so they don't mind. Downside to winshield. When it snows hard you can't see without a wiper. I tip my window out to see when it snows. It will also fog on the inside when going through water due to the steam coming from the engine. Get one with a powered wiper and don't look back!

I have both lock and ride full/half windshields with back glass. Full for winter, half for summer. In our sport your going to get dusty, dirty and wet, regardless what configuration you run.

I agree, you will get dirty no matter what, but to a MUCH lesser degree when running roof, full front and rear windshields, and doors. I've been in monsoon rains and the only thing that would get wet at all is my left knee. My quad buddies wear full on rain gear and are miserable when it's cold and rainy. Oh I remember those days when I rode sport quads. If someone could only come up with a way of dipping yourself in a vat of latex before every ride and then peeling yourself clean after a day of riding, they would make millions just from quad riders :rofl3:.

I wouldn't have one with out roof and front and rear windows.. And those guys saying you eat more dust in the cab with them with out them are doing something wrong.. Heck I've got pictures of people on our group rides. Everyone is a little dusty dirty. Then you have those one or two in the picture that looks like someone has shoved their face into the dirt and sat on it.. They will have a clean spot where the googles and mask were at.. Rest of them covered.. NO thank you.. If you get a lexan window make sure its MR10 coated.. Carry a squeegee with you in the cab. a splash of water and few swipes with the squeegee and your clean.. For dust those micro fiber car mitts will wipe the dust right off in one pass.

I run a full windshield, roof and doors, i hardly get any dust in my cab. I get a little but not enough to make a difference. When you have wind passing across anything that is open behind it, your going to have an air pocket that is going to allow dust to be sucked into it. I think the full windshield, the top, the doors and possibly the back glass (i have run it with and with out the plastic back glass) is the best setup for the type of riding i do. I live 1 mile from rockhouse trailhead on hatfield mccoy trail system, so you know the type of riding that i do.

The windshields are nice for blocking dust and debris but personally you spend a lot of time keeping it clear, clean or from being fogged up. When not clear you are definitely losing a full field of vision which can be dangerous IMO.

I've been struggling with this same decision lately.

It would be nice to have some protection, but where do you stop? You get a windshield front and back, a roof, doors - If I'm totally enclosed, then I might as well just drive the Yukon. And by the time you add all of that extra weight, the Yukon might seem faster...

I feel the same. I got the half shield instead of the full to avoid the dust swirl, but it still happens. I raised it up a few inches to minimize the dust and it seems to help. I just wanted to keep the wind off my face. I'm considering a rear net to see if that helps or just going back to no shield at all. I'm against a full enclosure. That's just ridiculous IMO. Full enclosure, heater, windshield wiper, radio, heated seats etc etc might as well have bought a Jeep.
