Winches and install

I searched and read a few threads, but wondering if there any particular winch that's above and beyond lately for an RZR. I've got 3500lb Polaris on my ATV and it hardly seems like it can handle deep "sticks". It really bogs when asked for a lot. Is a XT30 Warn going to be strong enough to pull out a 1000lb RZR from the mud? What are the other options? Gotta have a winch in Maine.

Also, how bad is it to install them. I've read some stories of taking nearly the whole get to get correctly mounted.

I also have a XT30. gets a little bogged down, but that is fine for a winch, they are geared to do that. took maybe 2 - 3 beers to install, and the RZR is already predrilled to mount the solenoid on the firewall, you will have to use the red/black wires for the winch to solenoid connection, and the yellow/blue wires for the battery. I was able to install the entire thing without taking too much apart.

Funride...I have the 3500# Polaris on my 4...and so far it gets the job done...SLOW as hell under a real load but hasn't stalled yet. And like Tuf-Skin mentioned...I ALWAYS carry a snatch block just in case....
With that said I only went with it because it was basically given to me in the deal...I wanted something larger...
I was going to get a Warn 4000#(need a special mount IIRC)...but with the 3500 falling in my lap I figured I'd give it a shot. Now if I need a new one after hearing so many positive reviews on the Vipers I'll likely look hard at them.

As for the install...it is really a breeze. Bolt up the mount throw in the winch. Mount the contactor and run power cables and remote wiring..nothing to it.

Think I'm gunna go Warn with the wireless remote. Like that idea to have the option to be away from the machine in nasty conditions. Like the lifetime warranty a lot too. It's got to work when asked, which seems to be often on an ATV anyway.

Rod....Can you post a couple of pics of where the factory winch is installed? Figure the Warn will mount in same location. I take it I'll need to buy a mounting plate, or can a winch bolt right onto a RZR?

Yeah, 3000lbs with a snatch block should cover 99%.

Well this is good to hear that it's not that bad. I've heard others say it's a real PITA and have the dealer install.

Thinking I'll go Warn 3K XT. My currently Polaris 3500 locks up and you have to move it back and forth a bit, then it will free spool out. It never used to do that and it's less than 2 years old. Has been used a lot though.

Contactor mounted on "firewall", view from right front wheel..

Thanks. So the "contactor" or solenoid attaches wherever you can find a place up under the right front wheel, or did you say there was a place from the factory to locate it?

Maybe I can bargain for a cheap Polaris 3500 like you. I'd take a $100 Polaris over a $500 Warn at the moment. I don't anticipate taking an RZR into the god-awful mess I took my XP through. It's just too nice a machine for that kind of abuse. I could be wrong though.... :)

I installed a 4,000 lb Viper Max Winch with AMSTEEL RED synthetic winch rope and dashboard switch.

I ended up installing a warn xt40 in the stock location and for a sxs I will never buy anything else, I think this thing would pull the front end off before it bogged down. The only mount that will work for the warn xt40 or the rt40 is the rzr winch mount from hunterworks, great quality product and they have an install video on the website. But be warned installing a 4000lb winch in the rzr is a royal PITA!! By the time I was done mounting the winch, all the electrics and wireless reciever I didnt have any skin left on my knuckles and I walked away from it cursing more than once, lol. But in the end it was worth it to have something I know wont leave me in a bind.

a couple install notes. with the warn, be prepared to swap the cabbles around. you will get 2 long and 2 short. the short (red and black) are meant to go to the battery but with the solenoid on the firewall they wont reach. the long ones (blue and yellow) will though. luckily the red and black are long enough to go from the solenoid to the winch. i see that many mount the solenoid on the outside of the firewall but i was also able to mount it on the inside of the firewall (inside of the cab). should keep it a bit cleaner.

i have been pleased with the warns on my jeeps for years so it was a no brainer for the rzr. havent had any bogging or issues yet when buried in the snow (no real mud here)

I would have preferred to put the solenoid inside...but the cables that came with the Polaris winch were not long enough to go from the winch to the solenoid if I put it inside..

I believe I read in an earlier post someone who mentioned the name "Superwinch". Where i'm from they are the cheap of the cheap and sold by the surplus stores. I know people who have bought them and it seems that they buy a new one once a year. Why? I don't know. I suppose it's because they go on sale for $50 every summer. I don't care if it's free! because a free winch that fails 20 miles into the woods doesn't sound like a good deal to me. LOL. I'd rather pay $500 and get home laughing.

I have a viper 4500. Its the 2nd one i've bought. I had one on my ranger too. A 3000lb winch couldnt handle what i need one to do. if you go too small on the winch you can and eventually will burn it up. (warn warranties the mechanics of its winches but not electrical.) Different areas have different mud and its like a vacuum here and hard to pull out of. As for warn vs. viper, $600 vs. $200. They are built identical and i've seen as many warns burnt up as vipers.

Ive got the Polaris 3500. Probably somewhere around a year old, has never let me down my only complaint like alot of you guys is its slow when it gets loaded down. I was impressed with it a few weeks ago i had the rzr burried in mud up to the "Polaris" lettering on the front of the hood and it pulled me out--slowly!

Promark (used to be Gorrilla) 4K Outback. Less then $200 off ebay and came with a mount and fairlead that are really stout.

There was talk about swaping wires short for long. I think the length of the cables is standard. I ran the long yellow and blue under the floor board to the area behind the drivers seat just below the computer box (ecu Ithink) then the red and black worked perfect.
When it comes to the controller switch the wire length seems to vary. I had another winch that had longer wires, so that location worked great for me.

i mounted my solenoid under the seat in my xp9 right next the the battery, should i worry about it and move it to the firewall or just keep it there, it seems to fill up in there. maybe adding just a drain in there would be good, what do u think? im running the viper 5000 elite and they say its water proof
