While flipping through the Moab...Street Legal thread, a couple of comments really stood out at me:

Rumor had it, that sombody drove down Main Street and drove like an idiot so the rules were changed.
The town really likes us, so do the police, as we bring money and support their economy. <snip> He commented that there always has to be "someone doing donies in the intersection. And they won't allow that.

Whether these are rumor or fact, they really resonated with me. This seems to be a (sadly) common sequence for us:

  • A rider gets an idea for something that would be good for us. (could be anything - access to public/private land, street use, trail heads, etc)
  • A long period of diligent work follows.
  • "Idea" almost dies. More work, by many more folks ensues.
  • Finally, idea gets enacted.
  • About 6 months later, some entitled Richardo Cabeza ruins it for everyone else.

Sheesh. We have met the enemy, and they are us.

Could it be this world is full of a bunch of enviro whackos and safety nazis? Nothing wrong with cutting loose every now and then. If you people think the enviro whackos or safety nazis will stop with their BS because we kow tow to them, you are sadly mistaken. Their goal is to eliminate us eventually, no matter how we think we can pacify them.

So what are you saying? It's only the enviro and safety Nazis that are the problem? Doing donuts on Main Street in the middle of town is "cutting loose" now and then, so okay?
No, it's the idiots "cutting loose", who have no respect that bring the "Nazis" down on the rest of us!

I do agree with you. I have ridden a lot of BLM land and hate to see where people have decided to try to climb hills that are clearly closed. Yet they attempt to climb them, or do climb them, sometimes evry ten feet or so along the whole length.

Unfortunately, it's much easier and financially more sound to close the area to OHV as opposed to trying to enforce the rules.

That said, we are often treated differently for some reason. If someone on a bicycle is clowning around on the sidewalk creating a hazard to pedestrians, they do not ban bicycles from the area.

“””””””enviro whackos””””””

Well I am one,, and I ride and own RZR 800

I have awards form
EPA 2011 mid Atlantic region – Environmental Achievement Award
Pa. Cleanways 2008 community Cleanup award
DEP, the County and Borough
I have been involved in environmental cleanups for over 10 years.

I get sick and tired of stereo typing ….

Your either a responsible ATV rider and a friend of the environment

Or you’re a jerk,,

I guess this will be my last post here,,,,

And this is why we as OHV'ers get walked all over. Divide and conquer. "Yes Please, envirowhacko man...please let me ride on this 20 acres of land if I give you the other 2000 so the precious snowy plover can mate". Its BS. The mentality of that is the same as the jews in Nazi Germany. If we just be quiet and do what they say, MAYBE they won't hurt us. We all know how that turned out...
Then by golly lets grab our pitchforks and storm the capital, otherwise the ovens await us.

Why do people think someone should give them something,,, land to ride on?? WHY

Earn it

Ever think about volunteering you and your ATV for EMS and or search and rescue??
Ever take a garbage bag along on your rides and cleaning up after others??
Maybe people should just slow down and look around before it’s all gone….

OO that’s right this is a free country ,, maybe it still is ,, but it not free to do as you please, where ever and when ever you want,

Personally YES I am an activist.

Agreed, he is likely confused. Paying taxes does not give the right to ride trails/land people worked hard to make available and keep available for all. As others have said, it is a privilege. "MY PUBLIC LANDS"? Really? "My" and "Public" are 2 diametrically opposed words that rarely work well together.

MY implies ownership where you can do whatever you want without too much regard for others

PUBLIC implies that it is shared by all of us and requires everyone to do their part to make sure it stays PUBLIC.

There may have been a time when a loud voice was what it took to get attention from the gov, but in todays world the passive voice accomplishes much more when supported by numbers and money. Nobody is going to give you squat if you are "in their face". Believe me, whether you are right or wrong, you get in my face...... you get nothing!

#32 ·
Well...at least some of us are our own enemies!! Those that don't "stay the trail", those that don't clean up after themselves, those that don't ride and drive in a responsible manner.

Yes, there are some whacko groups out there. There is one group working to get all the trails in the Moab area closed. Fortunately the town is working in our favor.

What I would like to see are signs at the trail heads stating what the rules are, and that if you are caught breaking the rules its a $1000 fine. Yup, first offence and ever one after.

Perhaps that would get people's attention...all of us out on the trails!!!

Well I guess we can agree to disagree....this "hat in hand" approach to government and special interest groups is why we are in our current predicament. We continue to make concessions and give in in the hopes that the government or special interest group will not take more of our land away, all the while the special interest groups and liberal politicians continue to take more. Its the same thing whether its OHV, guns, taxes, health care, etc. We need more "in your face" people instead of a nation of sheep. If someone does something wrong, then punish them. But do NOT accept the notion that if one person does something wrong, we should all be punished. That is a flawed premise and will result in more of our freedoms lost.

I think the correct approach would have been to treat this guy "cutting loose" in a UTV the same way he would be treated in a regular vehicle. What would have happened if he was in his truck doing donuts in the middle of the street? Probably an impound for starts.

The fact that he did in in a UTV doesn't help the sports image any, and punishing everyone else because of one idiot doesn't make sense either.

The problem is that incidence like these give the Enviro Nazis more ammo in the courts when they are trying to close trails and roads.

#43 ·
You just keep missing the point. He allowed NON licensed vehicles to drive on the roads until they abused it, and then he took away that privilege.

No different than taking away a privilege from your kids when they abuse it.

He didn't take away anything from those that were licensed.

The whole point of the thread is that when someone gives us something above and beyond what the law allows, it's sad to see some abuse it.

I agree that the offenders should be the ones punished for an infraction.

Unfortunately, this is a bit idealistic. The reality is that the rest of us will suffer the fallout from the actions of a few.

I've been involved in a lot of sports, and every one has it's collections of self-absorbed rule breaking wahoos. OHV, though, seems to have a higher ratio of the wahoos than the other sports - and - the consequences that follow seem to be much more draconian.

OK...but lets talk some about how we can help our sport deal with these issues.

We need to speak up if at a Rally "driver's meeting", the issues of "staying the trail", "pack it in, pack it out", "obey the traffic laws", "respect what local law enforcement will allow" and foremost, "don't ruin it for the rest of us"!!

I don't mind getting involved in fighting for our rights to use the trails. But I hate having to be an "apologist" because the "STUPID PEOPLE" are really pissing the greenies off!

I have, out on the trail, responded to angry bicyclists and horse riders...when they looked pissed because I was there. "Where is your trash bag? Here's mine, I pick up all the trash I see along the trail. I pull over to let you by. Shut off my engine for those on horseback. Why do you give me such angry looks? Sadly some simply don't respond and go on. But a few comment, You have point there. Don't know if it changes their mind...but I'm doing my best to support our sport.

Thoughts?

Probably the bigger difference between the green weenies and us, is that more of them vote and are politically active. I know many of us do our part, but it's an unfair war between the two sides, and we just have to realize that we are the ones at a disadvantage.

All you can do is continue to try and educate people, but unfortunately you can't fix stupid and people that do doughnuts in intersections are just that. Maybe some mob justice and a can of whoopass would better suit this type of individual.

#47 ·
So we all become vigilantes and bring lynching back into the norm? The US Army had the same mentality when I was in basic training. How about a blanket party for so and so who is always last on the runs. Worked good right up until they beat the crap out of a guy who had asthema. He was drafted and had no business being in the Army. Spent a month in the hospital because of it.

Are you going to judge who gets the mob justice and how bad?

Hey everyone...let's cut with the negative comments!!

We all have our thoughts, opinions and beliefs. One thing we all want is to see our sport thrive.

We all need to work to keep things safe, keeps the trails clean, and keep those who disregard the law from ruining things for all of us!!

When you are with others, talk it up! Be safe, stay the trail, clean up after yourself and others, and talk with those who choose to do things that jeopardize our sport!!
