I know people have talked about using Various tablets as on-board gps's. I'm curious as how folks have mounted them and have they held up to the off road vibration and pounding.

I use an Ipad Mini with an app called Maps3D. I had to buy an external GPS device made by Bad Elf for $99. I got a suction cup mount that attaches to the dash off of Amazon for less then $28. That thing has been secured to my dash for well over a year now and even survived a minor roll over. I swear by that thing and would recommend it to anyone. Here is the link to the mount.

I am also running the Bad Elf with my iPad mini.

I've been using a Samsung Tab 2 for my GPS for 3 or 4 years now with Backcountry downloaded for maps. I put it in an Otterbox and use Ram mounts, it works great and when at home use it as a personel computer, in fact I'm using right now.:)

I have a Samsung tab4 and have ram mount and cradle and that works well mounted to roll bar. I just moved it down and velcro'd it to the center dash storage. (Tab4 in otter box case). Down low and protected from most of the mud and water and can see it easily and doesn't distract when driving (like it did up on the roll cage sometimes). I have back country nav pro and orux both installed and both work well

What great replies! Thanks for all of the input.

I noticed one person said that they were using an auxiliary gps with the tablet. Has anyone else done that or are most folks relying on the on board gps?

You can still use the Ipads and devices without an internal GPS. Just get a Dual 160 external GPS receiver and it bluetooths into your tablet or other device. It can bluetooth up to 5 devices at the same time and up to 30'. It can also track you. It comes in a flat rubber small case and sticks on anything. I have used one for years in all kinds of situations works great. I just toss it on the plastic hood of the Razor and it never comes off.

Works great. Even your buddy can bluetooth in and he'll get a signal when he's within that 30'.

This is a classic thread on setting up the Nexus 7 for GPS.

http://www.rzrforums.net/general-rzr-discussion/93140-my-android-tablet-gps-setup.html

I have used that same basic setup for 2+ years now with great success. The Nexus has worked great although the display could stand to be brighter in sunlight. I may try mounting up near the roof instead of the steering column.

I now use Locus instead of OruxMaps for the app. Orux just burned me too often and the $7 for Locus was money well spent.
I download all my offline maps using PC software and then transfer to the Nexus. Much faster and better map sources are available this way.

I typically ride in Nevada and California, so mostly dry riding, but it will take some fairly good mud with no issues.

Good luck,
T

Do you have a metal roof and has it caused any issues with gps reception? I'm thinking about moving mine up there.

Perhaps I'm being dense, but what are the sources of off-line maps? The two apps that I'm interested in are Backcountry Navigator and Locus. I've only fiddled with the free versions. Are the pro versions the key to accessing off-line maps?

Are there any other off-line map sources?

I would go with a tablet with a lot of memory. Downloading maps takes up a lot space, if you download as many as l do. My old Samsung Tab 2 has a port so you can put different chips in it and use them for maps. This makes the memory unlimited.

I'm also using back country navigator, you can download area maps with that so no cell service needed, I'm using the free LG Gpad that I got with my phone with a ram tablet mount on my dash, works really good, but just not a lot of cases out there for the gpad, but hey it was a freebie, thanks KH

I been thinking about the same thing. During my research I found out that a tablet needs at least GPS and wifi connection. GPS for satellite to track you on BackCountry Navigator (BCN) or OrxMaps or your favorite navigation app, and the wifi to download maps, manuals etc. when your home. The other big thing I discovered was A-GPS and Glonass. A-GPS is a Assisted Global System which gets information from satellites by using network resources e.g. mobile network, also called assistance servers. Glonass is a Global Navigation Satellite System which is Russia's version of GPS. So with all this said, I'm going to purchase the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8-inch which has all 4 (GPS, A-GPS, Glonass, Wi-Fi positioning), RAM X Mount and a good waterproof dust resistance case. If everything works the way I think it will, I might even buy a RAM Mount for my truck and use it as my GPS in stead of buying a new Garmin, which just crapped out on me. Also, the Tablet I mention is 16 GB and has a USB 2.0, microUSB slot and USB charging.

Anyone with experience in this area, please give feed back. I have also done a lot of reading on here on what works and some what works. I get my info here and research the Internet and this is what I came up with.

I have a galaxy tab 4 7" in an otter case using a ram mount on the steering column
I have a few programs, orux, BCN and the polaris orv program.
The polaris app tends to show trails best for me, even though the app itself needs some serious help.
We tend to ride and get dirty and wet and the only issue i have ever had.... is that when it is raining the screen occasionally thinks you are touching it when water runs down it, haha.

Tab 4 7 inch here. Works great in otter box case. As mentioned only issue is if screen gets real wet it thinks u r touching it. I have both bcn pro and orux and while orux is a bit more complicated and in depth, I like it better

Orux is the only stable solution I have found for really long rides. It has been rock solid for a 16 HR day covering 185 miles.

As for Tablet I want waterproof so I use a Sony Experia Z2 tablet. It's 10" and great!

Since my research came to the conclusion that it's best to have cell phone capability I started looking for a used tablet in my case iPad because I wasn't planning on using it a lot otherwise. My suggestion if your gonna have cell data plan, check with your courier for specials. I got a new iPad for less than someone's unknown issues. Yes you need a two year commitment but with my family plan it's $10 bucks a month. Just letting people know what's out there.
