Hi All I have been getting a lot of PM'S about my system so here's the Info .

I already had the Polaris Gps mounted in the 1000's .But I was looking for something a little easier to use and something with multiple functions .

Enter the I Pad Mini .Mine has wifi and cell service ,But you do not need cell service for it to work .If you get the I pad with the GPS receiver built in it will work off the GPS satellites .

The orange mount in the photo below was the original Polaris mount

I had to add wooden shims to the mount to get the proper angle for the I pad .I covered the mount with industrial Velcro to hold it in place .I also added a lip at the bottom to give it support in the rough desert washes .I am also adding a gun safe behind the I pad mount .I can remove the I pad to take photos /Videos and for washing of the machine.

So I now have a great GPS system I can zoom in and out with my fingers ,I can add waypoints with a tap of my finger .I also added a first aid app ,A wilderness survival app,And the service manual for the 1000 xp .I have been using this system for about 3 months now and is great having all these resources right on the dash of the RZR .

The Motionx HD GPS system can also download custom maps and way points.

That is just too cool. Are they as easy to control as they look?
The only thing is you need to change the WiFi address on the I pad mini to connect to each camera .They all have a unique address .I got a little lag on the first Test on Sunday on the I pad but the video came out fine .

Do you have the mini hooked to a 12v charger our do you just take out and charge as needed?
I do carry a plug in 12 volt charger for it , but I think I have only used it once .

PDF Maps is another free app that would be useful in this situation. You can download USFS maps as well as USGS Tops. Track your trip, measure distances, mark waypoints, & more. App works well with no service also.

I use my Ipad with the Delorme insight GPS....Delorme offers topographic maps where you can track your progress and even share on mapshare. As long as you have a clear look at the sky...no issues. I keep my ipad in a tusk overhead map holder. If confused, go to map and look at tracking and location. The bluetooth connection works w iphone also and not to worry because all direct to sattelie not a phone tower. If SOS, the beacon goes off to alert stage.

Another great app to check out is called ski tracks. Tracks you via gps, works off of google maps, allows you to take pics and places them on your route from the location taken, tracks speed, altitude, etc. great app!

I use it with my iPhone every time I head out. Just set it for snowmobile mode instead of ski mode. Works awesome for $1.99!

While we're on the app subject, what other apps are you guys using? I found a cool one called altimeter the shows the altitude your at for us guys that go to the mountains. I have the speed one Frank posted but haven't got to try it out yet. One of my favorite apps is my radar for weather stuff.

Re: Using a I Pad Mini for GPS ,With Motion X and a Camera Monitor/Controller in A R

I'm running three different map programs depending on what I'm doing. I have the MotionX software that Frank recommended, one from Trimble Outdoors that using USGS topo maps that can be downloaded and saved for off net use.

I also have one by OnXmaps that shows land owner info for particular states. You have to order for each state. It gives land boundaries for government and private property. I used this one since the 1st while hunting in Wyoming. Keeps you honest when hunting private property. :) And off the neighbor's place.

All work great.

I forgot, I have bluetooth connected my iPad mini loaded with music to my SSVworks unit. Works pretty darn good. :)

I mounted it on a RAM mount on the steering column in my XP4 900, since I don't have the fancy dash mount like Frank's. :)

I'll try to get some pics posted.

Re: Using a I Pad Mini for GPS ,With Motion X and a Camera Monitor/Controller in A R

I may have to use a longer RAM connector to get it a little higher. It worked OK when we were in WY but was hard to make any changes on the iPad.

Do you guys set the display settings so the screen is always on? Or are you pushing the unlock button and swiping the screen to unlock everytime you want to use it? Frank mentioned battey life lasts all day, you have to be locking it right? Thanks!

Re: Using a I Pad Mini for GPS ,With Motion X and a Camera Monitor/Controller in A R

Jake,

I haven't had a chance to run mine all day, but I do set it to not lock when using it in the RZR. I have a power cord that I can use in the RZR, but have not yet.

My longest run without power was about 2 hours. I don't remember how low the battery got, but it was not bad enough to have to get it powered quickly.

Hi Jake I had to start using my power cord because I am using the cameras with the wifi on the ipad ,It uses a little more power .But she still lasts about 4 hours with it being on all the time before I have to plug it in .Brightness on all the way bright ,auto brightness off.
