Today I spoke with Shock Therapy, ZBros, Walker Evans, and talked to a King shock supplier I have dealt with in the past.

What is the general consensus on replacing the stock shocks, or modifying the stockers? 2018 XPT4.

A few interesting points...

Walker adamantly stated the front 2.0" shocks are too small. They said the 5/8" shafts, and related oil capacities, are not sufficient and the shocks will heat and fade, possibly bend. They said spending any money on the stock fronts is a fools errand.

Each company who offered a rebuild stated there was a night and day difference between stock, and a stock shock valved and sprung.

Each company was confident that for 90% of the riding I do, a set of Kings was not necessary. But, each supplier said there was a big difference between an internal bypass King shock, and a built up stocker. Better components (body, wear bands, heims, etc.) and the bypass would provide better two stage dampening.

Some options, without calling out any vendor.

If I sent out my 4 walkers to be valved and setup to the best of their capabilities, is $1900. This includes larger front shafts and reservoirs.

Stock REAR walkers rebuilt and sprung, with NEW front 2.5" Walkers is $2300

King 2.5" front and rear, with internal bypasses, $3800

My driving style is a mixed bag. We live in Utah, wheel Moab/Sand Hollow 50%, the mountains 40%, and high speed serious riding maybe 10% of the time. We are going to Mexico to run the Baja race track in March, 150-200 miles per day.

Only planning to keep my rig 2-3 years, then trade off.

I will "invest" any money... But, who has been here? Who has King IBP's on their rig? Who has built up stockers? Any real world experience out there?

If you can afford it, do Kings, but do their 3” rear IBP shock. Agree on the 2” shock on front those are worthless. If the money is too much I’d do the $2300 upgrading the front shocks and rebuilding the rears. Also look into Fox RC2. Shock Therapy has them in stock with their modifications. They swear by them.

The Fox RC2 setup is $3995 and has high speed rebound and compression settings, but no internal bypass. Some vendors really touted them, others said the KING bypass was a much better option, though only comes with compression adjustment. I would go with the King option, based on previous experience, and the IBP.

Going to the Kings with 3.0" rear shocks, includes finned reservoirs, is $5200. I was told by two King suppliers that option was necessary in a pure race application only. I had not even considered them for my rec rig, the money is too much.

Have you run either? what is your experience? You confirmed the front 2.0's are worthless.. Real world experience?

I can tell you I had the Kings with finned resorvoirs and after having revalved 3 different times was never happy with them, so don't expect the King to work right out of box, my best set up bang for buck was revalve rear and add anodized cross over and collar and replace fronts with 2.5 walkers, this is on 2016 XPT 2 seater. I did sell the Kings by the way. I also have the shock therapy gold edition RC2 on my 4 seater and it does not ride like its on clouds either, actualy my walkers are a more plusher ride.

Take a look at ADS racing shocks for springs and a re-valve. I did the springs first and it made a night and day difference on how the machine handled and rode. Then I did the re-valve and it made it night and day difference over just the springs. I will be letting them get their hands on my new Turbo S as soon as I get back from picking it up at Abernathy's.

I have ZBROZ Exit 2 shocks and springs on my 08 with SATV + 6 L/T and love them. Did everything over the phone with them and they nailed it first time. They asked me what kind of riding I do and how much weight is in the RZR. They even did a follow up phone call after I had them on for a while to make sure I was good with them. Great service and shocks.

I have pondered this so much as well. I’m in WV and run a very wide variety of trails and speeds. I have a ‘19 XPT 4 LE,but previously had a XP1K 4.

I have already done the Shock Therapy Stage 4 Spring Kit. It’s good, but I’m certainly not over the moon with it. It smoothed out some of the harshness, and the rear does well.

However I am not happy with the front end at all.

My 2016 XP1K 4 with a simple Racertech Spring Kit had a very plush ride. I’m wondering if the front sway bar has taken away from the front for just average riding. I just ordered walker links for the front to smooth it out.

If that doesn’t work I’m not sure what I will do.

Shock Therpy’s opinion is revalve will make me happy. But as you said that front 2.0 WE Stock shock just doesn’t bring me much confidence especially on a 4 seater.

In hindsight I should have started with the Dynamix, and then a Spring Kit would have probably solved my concerns.

How are the stock IBP's, once reworked and resprung by shock therapy? There is a freshly built set for sale locally to me that is a pretty good buy. Then I could try and sell off my stock walker's.

The downside to the stock Fox IBP shocks is the front is still a 2.0" piston, the rear is a 2.5" piston, not a 3".

I am leaning towards trusting WE and letting them have at it. Replace my stock fronts with their 2.5" setup, have them properly setup the stock rears. And also hook my rear sway bar back up, with a set of Walker links, and remove my front sway bar.

Any thoughts?

I agree on letting WE have it. In hindsite I should have spent my money w them. I may still.

If I were doing Baja at 200 miles a day, the 2.0’s would have to go for sure.

Ok, down to three choices:

Replace fronts with 2.5" Walker Evans, Walker Evans modifies the stock rears: $2450

Replace all 4 shocks with Walker Evans Velocity shocks: $3450

Replace all 4 shocks with King 2.5" Internal Bypass: $3750

My conclusions are the reworked Walker package will be great for my rec rig. But it is hard for me to look long term and know for a little more cash, I could have had the benefits/quality of the Walker Velocity, or King, setups.

Any advice out there?

As I stated above I am in similar debates w myself. I actually emailed back and forth with Reid Norton from Walker Evans. Incredibly helpful guy.

His thoughts were actually the stock shocks fully redone and resprung would be all I need for my relatively low speed east coast stuff..... but my goal is to have the plushest rig out there.

Would Velocity’s do that or are they going to be fairly stiff for racing setups.

The velocities won't ride harsh, in fact they should ride better at lower speeds, because the valving can be lighter with the progressive bumps stops.

WE told me I would be happy with the reworked stock setup and 2.5 fronts, but if I can afford to then go with the velocities.

I would replace the stock fronts with the Walker 2.5's to match the rear, and then get them all re-sprung and re-valved.

I went this route on my 2014, and it was the best suspension I had ever ridden on until getting my 2018 dynamix re-valved and re-sprung.

Only one option here guys for me. Fox rc2.5s from shock therapy. I've had this same setup on my 900xp, 1000xp, turbo xp and now my rs1. They just flat out work. I had Kings on my 900xp and after sending them in twice it still didn't feel correct. My turbo I tried the walker 2.5s on front and re did rear to match front. Still had nothing on my rc2.5s I was used to. Sold that stuff and bought rc2.5s and I will never stray again. They are the only manufacturer that actually gives you every adjustable option. High and low speed compression, full range rebound, preload, and crossovers. Just my 2 cents. And please don't waste your hard earned money on going through your stock walkers especially the front 2.0s. Here is my rs1 setup sxs compared to stock.

Im in the middle of installing shock therapy stage 4 kit now on my 2019 XP on my stock walkers. Im hoping it is good enough for trail riding here in PA. One thing that bothers me is the nylon dividers are not perfectly round inside and no matter how I spin them or the springs theres alot of noise on the threads of the shock bodies....

Spring kits are great for the guy that will never push his or hers car and like to just get a nice plush initial ride. If u are a slower paced trail rider they do help a fair amount if setup correctly. But if u are the guy that likes to go fast all the time or likes to push through the very rough at speed you really need the whole package. I think the issue with spring kits and why people are not satisfied is lack of setup time. To do it correctly you really need some scales to get your corner weights correct to set your ride height then you can dial in your crossovers. Also for some reason I see so many people on the east coast by me run a extremely low ride height. Low ride height will absolutely destroy your ride because the shock is way too far into the stroke. 14 3/4front with 14 1/2 rear ride height with 30s are about perfect. I run 16" front and 15 3/4 rear with my 32s and it's extremely on point at that height. As for the plastic rate sliders that's very common on aftermarket shocks. Most performance aftermarket shocks make noises. They either knock a bunch or you can hear the rate sliders moving around. I've had Kings, fox and walker 2.5s all around and all of them make way more noise than a stock pogo stick.
