We're currently at the Ashland Resort riding the Hatfield McCoy trails and heading over to Tn when we leave here next week and am confused on the permits needed to ride the different areas. I understand Windrock is private and has its own Permits. Brimstone has its own as well but looking at Trailsend they show to require a Tn 037 permit for out of state resident is right at $200 for an annual but ride royal blue website shows Annual out of state permit combo, type 071+093, $130.00 . So can I buy the 071+093 and ride Trails end area???? Does each area require different type permits?? Dang too confusing and expensive. Campgrounds are expensive as well . Already spent 100 for HM permits and over 500 on campground. We'd like to spend a couple weeks or so in the east Tn area but having to buy expensive permits for every area is pretty ridiculous.

I believe the TWRA permit is good for Trails End and Royal Blue. Royal Blue is selling a TWRA hunting permit that includes the trail permit which is actually cheaper. A small loop hole they found and pass along the savings.

Unrelated, but how are the trails there at Ashland, looking to head there in a few weeks...

Ashland Resort is a great campground. Top notch facility very well run. Locals are very friendly and everyone has shown us some really good trails. The HM trails marked green and about 1/2 the blue in the Indian River area are pretty tame but still fun. pretty wet here right now but zero dust which is a good thing. The Black trails are quite a bit more challenging. We rode to pineville yesterday which put us into the Pinnacle area and rode a lot of trails there that were a lot more fun to us a lot of up and down the mountains not extreme trails by any means but more of what we expected. Rode 85 miles yesterday and didn't get back till 9:00pm so 11 hrs was a long day. Probably ride some of the Pocahontas trails today . Hook up with some local people to show you the best outlaw trails. So many trails . Decisions Decisions.

For the TN permits/fees. The difference in price is one is a "riding permit $200" and one is a "hunting license $131". Ironically, the hunting license includes a the right to ride as well. As mentioned before...it is per vehicle not per person.

The Royal Blue and Brimstone areas are leased land and managed by those companies. You will need a permit from them to ride on those trials...the TWRA permit/license does not apply to those areas.

For Trails End, you will need the TWRA permit/license as those trails are on land that is not leased by them, but is managed by TN Wildlife.

Daily use permit is same type 038 for Trails End/Royal Blue/Sundquist. Per vehicle, not per person. Suspect the RB site has the updated pricing, as I paid the $15 local price a couple of weeks ago. Can also download the TWRA app to your phone and purchase the pass(s) online too. $3.00 processing fee added, but you get the pass emailed and texted to you.

Trails End site: Nonresident Daily Permit (Type 038) - $30.50
Royal Blue site: Daily out of state permit, type 038, $37.00

Trails End and Ride Royal Blue are just campgrounds they do not own or lease any trails. They just sell TWRA permit for the riders convenance. TWRA permit cover all the trails in this area except Windrock and Brimstone. And as already mentioned TWRA permits are one per vehicle Windrock and Brimstone are per person.

Thanks for the help. We plan to spend a week in the area so daily permit won't work. looks like either Ride Royal Blue or Trails End with the TWRA permits then . Guess depends on where we can get a comping spot .

Just returned from there, another thing they do not tell you at trails end is that you are actually closer to the trails at brimstone than the trails end trails. so I say just get the brimstone pass since the trails are closer. to ride the trails end trails we had to ride 7 miles down a gravel road to get to the trail head.

Windrock is $17 a day / person or $88 a year. In state or out of state does not matter. Great camping also at Windrock campground or Sportsmans campground. There is an additional free for special events of $15 / person. There is a MAJOR event this weekend.
