Hey everyone. Bought a brand new 2011 rzr LE today. Took it out to get some miles on it and found that everytime I would get slowed down while either braking or not, the thing let's out a squealing/metal on metal type sound. I was also getting a strange smell, but attributed it to the fact the thing is brand new and needed to be worked in. The best I could tell it was coming from the right rear. I did a search and found everything from clutch issues to belt issues and brake pads. I'm not a mechanic and don't have great troubleshooting skills. Is this sound normal or would you guys/gals suggest taking it back in to get looked at? The sound is very annoying and having a brand new machine that sounds like that is irritating. Most of the threads i read were 2008-2009-S models having some noise issues. The thing ran great otherwise. Acceleration was good and no noises other than slow speed braking or engine braking. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Troy

Same thing happened to me after the first ride, i haven't had my second yet but I am sure it will go a way. This clutch-belt break in is new to me. I never had such a thing with any of my sportsmans the 700 or 800. But it is a clutch noise, my noise came from the left

Thanks guys! I feel much better now! I was worried something was going wrong and didn't want to ruin a new machine. Much appreciated!

Mine did it the first 20 miles I put on it. Scared the crap out of me at first. Its just the belt slipping off the clutch as you start coasting. I started feathering the gas going down hills to keep the belt engaged. The sound has pretty much went away now. Its definitely the drive belt though, nothing to worry about unless it gets louder.

Mine does it too. As you slow down just before you stop. I dont like it and I do not think its a good thing, but apparently they all do it. Still does not make it a good "normal". I will pull the clutch cover one of these days and take a look.

The RZR's no longer have EBS braking. I think what everyone is experencing is the belt squeal at the moment the clutch releases. It is normal. My 2010 makes a chirp chirp sound then goes into free wheel. This happens about 2200 RPM. With EBS braking the clutch releases and a one way bearing takes over. Now they use a 2 way bearing that doesn't provide braking. If you need braking you can either bump the throttle above 2200 RPM or use low gear so the RPMs are higher. I had a 800 sportsman before that had EBS. I didn't care for it. It would lock up when I didn't want it.

The smell of the belt isn't right. Do you ave any trouble getting it into gear? If so maybe the clutch offset need adjusted. I try do drive in low gear if my speed is below 15 and especially below 10. It helps with the braking and also is easier on the belt.
