The best front tires are the smoothies. The sand stars are a molded tire and are heavier. They will work ok but get good rear paddles first. That is more important. You could always run stock up front and skats in the rear until you can buy some good front tires.
I ran Dunestars for about a year. They do work better than stock tires. I recently switched to Doonz tires and the difference is night and day. The problem with the dunestars is that they are sort of pointed at the center of the tire and tend to dig holes. The Doonz and Scat Tracs are almost twice as wide in cross section and flat will not dig holes. I've been stuck at the apex of dunes several times with the stars and it sux a lot. With the wider tires, it just goes when you stomp the gas,
Also the weight difference between the two is a bunch.
I switched about two months ago and couldn't be happier
