No not necessary unless the sub you use requires less air space than the box provides. Stick with the recommended subs because the mounting is tough with the way the enclosure is designed. There’s a hump on the inside that won’t allow a lot of subs to fit with a larger basket.

 

After many attempts of trying to find out what JL sub to use. I ended up getting the ssv enclosure with the kicker RT sub. Had some good feedback on it. Using a JL Mx amp. Actually 2 of them altogether

 

good call, because nothing JL fits! I tried 3 different ones and ended up with the Kicker as well. It sounds great.

 

I used a JL 10" sub and it fit just fine. I did need to redrill the holes to mount the sub though.
